Activities September 2017- June 2018: MIGRANTS & REFUGEES, PRESENT AND PAST

  • POLAND

While preparing to mobiity in Italy, Polish students were obliged to get familiar with the vocabulary and topic connected with refugees and migration. They made many projects and tried to found ideas for helping reugees in our city. As a result they made a brochure "We're helping refugees in our city" with the instructions and hints how to live in our cty and how to get to certain places.

In order to have more time to concentrate on the topic "Migrants & Refugees" 16 students and 3 teachers spent a weekend in October 2017 at a youth hostel not too far from our school. From Friday afternoon until Sunday we had time to delve into the book "Bestimmt wird alles gut" by Kirsten Boie, which narrates the story of a Syrian family leaving their home. Students enacted how they imagined the scenes described in the book and thus gained access to the feelings of the protagonists. A long list of questions was prepared, questions for schoolmates who had come to our school from other countries. Some of our students realized that they could also ask their parents as they would have their stories, so far untold, to share.

Some of our students with migrant or refugee background volunteered to be interviewed by their schoolmates. For some of them, it was the first time to be asked such questions and to give a personal account of their relocation, which never is a voluntary decision of a child. For students carrying out the interviews, this was an eye- and heart-opening experience, as despite all the information they had gathered beforehand they could not imagine what some children had gone through.

    CYPRUS

Unfortunately, Turkish invasion in Cyprus in 1974 created chaos, made people suffer in many ways. 200 000 became refugees in their own country. Students (5th and 6th class) searched on the internet about this recent tragedy and interviewed refugees. Outcomes produced are listed below.

Turkish invasion impact on Cypriot people. Refugees story.

    Refugees history dramatized by students

Students (3rd and 4th class) prepared a presentation about Turkish occupied areas in Cyprus.

Students (1st and 2nd class) prepared boats representing refugees travelling in the Mediterranean sea seeking for a better future: WE WANT HOPE!!!

What do we know about migration?

Our approach started from a research on the meaning of the term 'migration' and on the possible causes which push a person, or hundreds of people, to move away from their countries. Our students started from a simple mindmap which they used as a guide for their initial hypotheses and following research work. On their Edmodo class the students were assigned a number of videos and slideshows to watch at home, and then a questionnaire related to the different topics. Most of the videos were included in the questionnaire, so they had a chance to watch them again before filling it in. As the last step, they summarized on some posters the main ideas and data they acquired during the lesson process.

A second, different activity involved different school subjects ( Art, History, English, Drama). It focused on the lively reproduction of some famous paintings. The paintings were selected because they represented an impressive reminder of some of the causes - and also sometimes tragical consequences - of migration phenomena. Our students started to work at this task before the LTTA and the last steps were carried out with the partner students during the LTTA; the previous work was shared by email and then briefly summarized before the students started cooperating on the last phases.
