    VALUES EDUCATION THROUGH THE SPORT

    ITALY

    Sports activities are an important part of our Project. They often represent meaningful moments of inclusion and integration which other school subjects are not able to offer in such a direct and effective way.

    The classes of our school participated to a national contest which required them to devise a motto able to describe how sports activities promote integration in different ways; they also had to produce a frozen scene, an image representing their motto. Several classes were involved, and one of them was among the winners for our region.

    INTEGRATION IS THE BEST VICTORY

Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than governments in breaking down racial barriers.”  NELSON MANDELA

     

    The contest aim was to enhance the students' awareness on the values promoted by sport and sports activities. It proposed 10 'rules' to become "True brothers in sport".

    Several activities and competitions were organized during the school year, and all the students of the school were involved. The first one was a cross-country race.

    In the same period, our students also experienced 'dance', supported by the guide of two professional dancers...

    After Carnival Holidays, the whole school was involved in "2 Sports Days", completely devoted to sports activities and moments of reflection and discussion on sport values - through the vision of some particularly meaningful movies and the chance to interview some sports champions. Particularly significant was the meeting with a paraolympic archery she- champion, Sandra Truccolo. During these days the students had the opportunity to try different kinds of sport activities which were new for them.

    CYPRUS

    We enjoyed in participating in an alternative sports activity day. As our project is fostering to brake any prejudices and promote social inclusion rigts for everyone we prepared a sports day with athletes that participate in a wheelchair basketball team. It was a great experience that let our students think out of narrow borders and prejudices that they had. Before the sports day we had a brainstorming regarding disabilities. Results were quite dissapointing as our students focused on feelings like pitty, sorrow, that these people are helpless and they cant do much things. After the sports day all these were replaces with true meanings, understanding that everyone can do anything but with his own unique way.  This day was about feelings, get in the place of the other and live real life lessons. The students in the video is our students trying to do what people with disabilities do. At first, they interviewed the basketball team which is.formed by people with disabilities, see how society some times blocks them out, how much power and will these people have so as to overcome all the physical and social obstacles they meet and then they had the chance to play with them and try the basketball on wheelchairs or as we now prefer to say "will-chairs". It was an unforgettable experience! Text in the video is what one of our students chose to express himself!
