French Tawashis

  • In class, we decided to recycle old T-shirts by turning them into tawashis. This Japanese object used old fabrics to make sponges to wash dishes.

At school, we made our looms out of cardboard. These boxes came from delivery cartons of school supplies at the beginning of the year.

We made notches on two opposite sides of the cardboard.

For the yarn, we cut up old T-shirts. We made sure to get only one very long wire, several meters. We then measured this wire and cut a 4.50 m piece.

We stuck the beginning of the yarn in a notch, then we went back and forth between the notches on the opposite sides and we wove our tawashis.

We're not going to use the tawashis  to wash the dishes (!), we're going to use them in class to clear our exercises on our slates.

With this activity, we were able to reuse two materials: cardboard and old T-shirts.
