6.5. Visiting National Parks: Pont du Gard and la Camargue

  • On Day 4, the goal was to learn about areas especially protected, National and Natural Parks. We visited two different National Parks: Pont du Gard and la Camargue.

NATIONAL PARK OF PONT DU GARDE

We took a bus to the area to visit the National Park of Pont du Gard. Pont du Gard is a world heritage site. It is both an archaelogical and natural area with olive trees dating from Roman times.

The archaeological area includes the Aquaeduct are and a Museum and the natural area a hike called Memoire de la Garrigue.

We learnt about the use and conduction of water and about new species introducted by Roman legions in the area and we could see millenial olive trees!

THE CAMARGUE: NATIONAL PARK PROTECTION OF WET AREAS

The Camargue Natural Park is one of the most important wet areas in Europe.

The outdoors activities included a hike through the Park, a game to learn to identify the main species adapted to the salty conditions, a visit to the Camargue museum with information about Carmargue traditions and to traditional houses.

Later on students had the oportunity to go the Stes. Maries de la Mer, a pinturesque village with a very old church and a great beach to have lunch in front of the Mediterranean Sea.
