2.9. September in Piteå: learning about Natural Reserves

  • Bondöfjärdens Nature Reserve

We have visited local forest areas to learn about its biodiversity.

Bondöfjärdens Nature Reserve is located about 10 km southeast of Piteå in the Piteå archipelago and includes about 10 islands.

The islands form part of the geologically interesting Piteälvåsen. (riverridge) The reserve is about 5510 ha large, of which 188 is land.

The reserve was formed in 1997. Some islands are bird protection areas, which means that landing bans are place between 1/5- 31/7 every year.

    Southern Norrbotten District

Southern Norrbotten district follows Pite and Lule river valleys from mountain to coast. The district is covered by the municipalities of Arjeplog, Arvidsjaur, Boden, Jokkmokk, Luleå, Piteå and Älvsbyn.

There are large forest resources and approximately 1.8 million hectares of productive forest land. The annual gross felling is approximately five million forest cubic meters, which are largely processed in the county.

It has five national parks and 90 percent of the country's national park area. Four of the national parks are part of the Laponia World Heritage Site.
