6.4. Day 3. Visit to the Garrigue: Domaine d'Escattes and Moulin Saint Nicolas

  • On Day 3, students get to visit and learn about Dry Forest Areas Challenges thanks to a visit to Domain d'Escattes.

    It is a protected area near Nîmes where local students guide and explain visiting students about the species and wildlife of the area. An orientation base created by students help them to recognise the most important ones.

    They also learn about dry-stone constructions characteristic to these region and use smartphones to create a trail.

     

    Olive trees are very characteristic to Mediterranean dry areas. Some species grow naturally like Olea europaea L. var. sylvestris but what the so-called "olive tree culture" arrived with the Roman conquest. Oil production was very important for hundreds of years. At present, and especially after a severy cold spell in the 1950's, only a few olive mills remain. 

    All this and much more was explained at the visit of Moulin Saint Nicolas Students visited one of these mills and learnt about sustainable traditional and industrial activities in the 21st century economy.
