Day 3. Storforsen: A Natural Reserve with Boreal Forest

  • Storforsen: Boreal Natural Park

Local students involved in the project and visiting students go on an all day excursion to Storforsen (Natural Park).  We left early in the morning and this the map of our trip.  This map shows the perimeter of the Park and the pathways.

Storforsen is the largest  free-flowing rapids in Northern Sweden, with a drop of over 82 meters and it is in fact a series of rapids more than 5 kilometers in length. Storforsen has great historical significance in the transportation of timber and tar. This link includes some basic information about the reserve.

To prepare the visit we answered in international groups a following questionnaire. But we spent most of the day walking a pathwalk that allowed us to learn about the vegetation and animals and traditional activities at Natural Reserve.

Stenvalls Trä is a large producer of flat timber made of pine. They take logs and they cut them to be used in the different industries as base material.

We observed how timber is transformed into logs and then wood or pellets and we interviewed the manager.
