  • Tamburaška skupina (Tamburitza band) in Primary School Strahoninec, Croatia

In our school, we have extracurricular music activity Tamburaška grupa (Tambouritza group). Ten students from grade 5 to 8 have rehersals every week for two school hours.

Their performances usually take place in school when organising programmes for parents, guests or on other occasions, but they also play as guests when cooperating with local community or othervise. They can perform their music solo or to accompany Folkore dance group or a choir.

Tambura (tamboura) is traditional croatian instrument for performing original traditional music. It is a string instrument played with plectrum and there are four types of tambouras: bisernica and brač play the main melody while čelović and čelo implement the melody. Bugarija and berde play instrumental part. This kind of music group can contain from 6 to 15 players.

Hi. We are Kim and Rasmus from Rosengårdskolen, Odense, Denmark. We are both music teachers and we’re going to join you in Greece in February. We’ll tell you a little about our traditions in music at our school.

Music lessons in general. Music lessons are mandatory in Denmark from 1st to 6th grade. From 7th to 9th grade you can choose music or choir. We also have a choir for the youngest pupils, which is also optional. We have a tradition of having extra educators (pedagogues) in the youngest classes.

Morning assembly (it’s all about singing songs). From 1st to 6th grade we start every morning with singing a few songs. All classes sit in front of the piano/guitar in the hall and sing together. Sometimes a story is told or a class shows what they’re working with.

Spring concert. Every spring we hold a huge concert in the evening with each of the music classes in school participating. All the parents and family are invited and it’s very popular.

Today we present you our music lessons at the high school Westercelle.

At our school, classes from 5th to 7th grade have music lessons once a week for 2 hours. In 2018, our music room was completely renovated and is now very large and beautiful.

The music lessons at our school are great fun. He is very practical, we develop a lot of content directly to instruments. So in class 5, we worked out different rhythms based on the song "fruit salad" or practiced the note names of the scale directly on the keyboards.

In addition, in the 3 years we deal with the instrument families. We get to know different instruments and may try them out. Trumpet, trombone, tuba, drums, violin, cello, flute, keyboard or guitar, everything is here and can be played. But also unusual instruments are used. The "Cup song" by Anna Kendrick we have reenacted with cups. We also sang that, which we liked very much.

For the whole class there are keyboards, guitars, ukuleles and cajons, with which we can accompany whole songs. A mix of instruments is also possible. In the 7th grade we re-enacted the song "Zusammen" from the "Fantastischen Vier" with keyboards, e-basses and cajons and rehearsed with two singers. A few weeks later we performed it in the auditorium at the annual Christmas party. We received a lot of applause for that.

We also get to know different bands and love to sing songs for the right season. Most of the time we sing German songs, but sometimes we also sing an English pop song. We sang for example "Another day in paradise" by Phil Collins or "I'm yours" by Jason Mrasz.

For 2 years we have been working with the "Young Americans", a troupe of young Americans from an American music school, who are doing a 3-day musical workshop at our school. This workshop ends with a big performance in our sports hall to which our families also come. That's great fun. The Americans are really cool. The songs that are danced and sang there are really fun and in the end you are really proud of yourself.

We are so sad that our music lessons are not taught in the higher classes, because we have too few music teachers at our school.

Each November 22nd the teachers and children of Barrufet School celebrate the day of Music.

As this year the school project is about “The Sea” in all the subjects we decided to work “The Habaneras” during this special day. “Habaneras” are songs about the sea and the sailors. A characteristic instrument of the Habaneras is the accordion. In the morning a musician explained the story of the instrument and played it.

In the afternoon, a musical group of Habaneras (a singer, a guitar player and an accordion player) made us sing and dance with the music. We had a fantastic day and enjoyed the music.

Music is strongly connected with Greek’s cultural background. As a lesson it is taught from 1st grade of primary school to the last grade of secondary school (9th grade). It is one of the most loved lessons and in every school there is a special room made just for music lessons.

The younger a student is the easier is the lesson. In the lower grades the lesson is basically connected with the preparation for the concerts, which usually take place in National Days or in Christmas. In higher grades except from, students are taught the history of global music and they get in touch with some instruments, sometimes used in concerts.

At our school classes from 7th to 9th grade have music lessons once a week, and if there’s a concert soon, they get prepared for it , otherwise they learn how to play some specific instruments like violin or guitar, or they do theory lessons. The music teacher, you will meet him in your visit, leads the choir in concerts that take place in National Days, before Christmas and before summer holidays.

My name is Ilona Fenclova, and I'm a music teacher. From my childhood, I wanted to be a teacher because I always enjoyed teaching, conducting and educating someone. My first pupils were my dolls and believe me, they were really great listeners. So I chose to study Music at the Faculty of Education of the Charles University. Throughout my studies I sang in the students choir and visited many foreign countries.

At this school I have been teaching over 20 years and it is great to feel that all activities related to music education  develop but above all  enjoy pupils.

During our Music lessons pupils  sing in the first place. They sing also the canon and also in  double voice. Some pupils are not good singers they rather grumbled as bears  but desire and good will are worth. Pupils often use Orff's instruments and  provide accompaniment for  their singing. They also learn the basic steps of some dances, and then it's really fun. They also learn about musical terms, nomenclature, and life of important composers.

Pupils also present their ideas of the music they are interested in. Not only for their classmates, but also for me are these lessons instructive. At least I have a constant insight into what is IN. Within classes, we sometimes organize karaoke singing competitions. All the kids have the opportunity to show off their talents. Those who discover musical talent inside themselves  then continue like singers or dancers in musicals or even appear on television screens. This is the way we can meet our  former pupil Michaela Sejnová, who is reaping success in the field of acting.(Ilona Fenclová)
