Aghios Vasilis (Santa Claus) comes to Greece in New Year’s Eve due to our religion. Orthodox Christians believe that Aghios Vasilis is Grand Basil, who lived in Cappadocia and dedicated his life in helping people in need. In global history he is considered as the initiator, as well as, the first creator of the organized charity. According to tradition, Basil was tall and skinny, he had black eyes and a beard. Grand Basil died on January 1st, 379a.C, so this date of his death, maintained in the tradition, was considered by all Christian people as a day who brings blessing and good luck for the new year.
