About a traditional toy in Greece

The "svoura", this small spinning game was one of the favorite games of children in Greece many years ago.  The earliest written reference is found in Homer`s Iliad. Its ancient name was  strobe, or a turbot. It was conical made of hardwood and was played with the scourge, with which it struck her holding it in rotation. During the 20th century, in Greece   the “svoura” had its golden age in the 50s and 60s. At a time when there was no current game abundance, a "spin in the pocket" was a precious asset. We meet this toy with various names in Greece:” Fourla” in Macedonia, marsh,  and "mygkaki" in Thessaly, and "treliaga" in the Peloponnese.Later, in the 1970s, the small wooden spinning toy begins gradually to resolve as an individual or group game, and today it almost disappears. Television, electronic games and life in the big cities are the opponents of the "svoura"
