A WINDOW TO GEOGRAPHY IN CROATIA

School in nature – extracurricular class in OŠ Strahoninec, Croatia

Near the end of the school year, our fourthgraders go on a school excursion which we call School in nature. That is an extracurricular form that includes a multi-day trip to visit natural, cultural, historical, sports and technical centers of our country – most often on the coast of our Adriatic sea. The school organizes this trip in order to accomplish certain educational goals and tasks and it provides quality time for students with each other and their teacher before moving on to the fifth grade.

The main goal of this type of extracurricular class is to bind school subjects in immediate reality and the program contains three basic areas:

Educational component includes walks and tours of places, buildings and monuments, field trips or activities on the beach. The goal is to acquaint pupils with our coastal terrain, climate, plants, animals; to find out what people do in that part of country and to get to know the coastal tourism. Each student gets pre-prepared teaching leaflets that help them in learning planned contents. Children also learn how to behave in diferent situations – in bus, in hotel, while sightseeing, in cultural centers and monuments and so on.

Sports activities are mostly swimming and water sports and recreation leans towards exploring and trying out music and traditional games of the area.

In the evening, after dinner, it is time for entertainment. There are, usually, organised theme-parties with games and dancing for children, adjusted to their age and interests.

In conclusion, our School in nature provides fun and educational activities and beautiful memories of completing first educational period.

Window to Geography in Athina School, Trikala Greece

We like Geography a lot, but unfortunately it is taught only once a week. Instead of just reading out of our books, we use several tools, such as maps, projectors and computers. Moreover, we work on assignments, like 3D maps of places we plan to visit.
