Project Evaluation

  • Reputation of the Erasmus+ program and European citizenship

among engineering students from vocational and secondary school and college.

Our differences and similarities inside the French school.

Summary written by Odile Jenvrin, June 14th 2019.

A survey was led at EEVEE mid project time in January 2019 by six university students in applied mathematics to statistics at second year of master level, CAPLAN Mateo, CHALONY Pauline, CRIGNON Valentin, FADIL Issam, FLAUX Pauline, LAHUTTE Maud, from the University of Caen, France.

The measurements datas were collected on a sample of 440 learners, mostly not involved in any Erasmus project specifically. They consist of samples of 190 students from secondary enginering school, 147 students from vocational school all aged 15 to 18, and 103 engineering college students aged 18 to 20 who had their secondary school education in both engineering and/or vocational school systems. The size of these three samples of datas allow reliable results from a statistical insight.

Find below a short summary of their most significant findings allowing an evaluation of the reputation of Erasmus+ program among the students from Lycée Institut Lemonnier, Caen, France as well as indicators for the future through Engineering college two years later.

What students in secondary school education already know, SIMILARITIES

    - A large majority of these students, over 90 %, have already heard about the Erasmus+ program.

    - Over 75 % of these students heard about it through their teachers in school whereas less than 5 % of them heard through their families.

This shows that school teachers are the most efficient vector of information about their potential mobility in Europe.

    - About 70 % of the students have heard about the Erasmus+ projects already held in their school. This shows that communication at school level is efficient.

    - Over 85 % of students think that foreign langage skills in English are necessary on the labor market today.

    - However, a large majority of students are not interested in participating themselves to an Erasmus project (60 % of engineering students and 78 % of vocational students).

    - Over 75 % of students think they can stay abroad for several days for professional purposes.

    - Over 83 % of them have already traveled at least once abroad in Europe.

    - Among the students who would like to study or to follow an professional internship abroad, about 48 % think of a time period less than one month.

This gives an indicator for the Key Action 1 of the Erasmus Program, European mobility in vocational schools.

    - From 47 % to 62 % of students know that financial grants exist to allow Erasmus mobility for them.

    - However, over 50 % of these students do not know where to find such financial Erasmus support.

This gives a new direction of work for teachers and staff.

DIFFERENCES among secondary school students and vocational school students.

Additional results collected among older students in engineering college show indicators of potential evolution two years later after secondary education obtained both in engineering or vocational school.

French University students in Master 2, majoring in math statistics wrote a survey to measure the impact of Erasmus projects among students in Lemonnier secondary school.

They visited classes to have the studetns fill their survey.

Their final analysis of datas are expected to be published by the end of March 2019.
