Food system: Definition & its interconnected parts

  • Dear students, and colleagues,

As you have already seen, step one of the WebQuest addresses Food system and its interconnected parts

In this step you work in almost all tasks individually.

Your teachers will call you to join a MENTIMETER  presentation, by using with your smartphones, the following QR code or by going to menti.com and use the code 3462907

    QR code for your presentation

PAY ATTENTION: It's valid now BUT expires soon!

There you have to give your answers to the following questions:

    • What is THE FIRST WORD that comes to your mind when you hear the word "system"? so as to start our discussion on the meaning of a "system".

After this happens, your teacher will move to the second slide, where you have to:

    • Try to give a definition of food system.

Here will be presented the answers of all the participants.

Now that you have a better idea on what is the food system, you are called to work in a common mind map. Take a look in the following photo (adapted by http://www.food.systems/ ), make an hypothesis on its interconnected parts and create a mindmap on the coggle app -after your teachers invite you to join- describing the food system.

(see details for using coggle app to the tutorial page)

It's now time to develop some more facts. Watch the following interactive presentation about food system. There is also included a self-evaluation quiz.

At the end of this presentation, make a discussion with your teachers on possible missed parts, or misunderstanding  and then you are called to add, if needed, some more parts to our mindmap.

Your last task for this step is to give an example of a food item that you like to consume, search for its journey until it comes to your plate (by paying attention to be included all the stages of the processing line)

Before you start your research, think about:

    -Which are its ingredients?

-What activities are involved in getting these ingredients?

-Which processes are involved so as these products transformed to this food item?

Present your food item's path in a form of an infographic in the following twinboard. You can make use of any app you want -specially recommended genially, as we have already signed up.

    Food system - potato production

    Areti P. Greece

Chip companies block the product from thousands of acres of potato growing. They choose a specific size. Once those arrive at the factory, they are peeled and boiled so as to soften. Then they go through a machine for precise peeling of the wrist and driven through a sorter. Then potatoes are climbed with the help of towers and are finely chopped by special machines. Then, they fall to hot oil where they are left to fry. Then are pushed so to remove the excess oil and at the same time cool down.
Then chips are passed under salt shakers to be salted.

My favorite food item is homemade lemonade.Put the water and sugar in a saucepan.
Stir and bring to a boil until the sugar melts and becomes a syrup.
Boil for 2 ′ and do not stir the syrup from the time it boils.
Allow the syrup to cool and come to room temperature.
Squeeze the lemons and strain the natural lemon juice into a fine sieve.
Pour the natural juice of fresh lemon into the cold syrup and mix.
Distribute in glass bottles and keep in the refrigerator for 2-3 months.
To serve at any time we must dilute it with cold water
or carbonated. Shake the bottle before serving. Finally add ice cubes and garnish with mint leaves.

    Bread Making Process

1.We start by harvesting the wheat which you drive later to the mills to do the grinding.
2.With the grinding we can get various kinds of flour, then they come to the bakers, at this point we were ready to create bread.
3.The first step is to heat the ovens to 230 ° C, we begin to prepare the dough in the mixer, pouring water, flour and the chariot (or the dough pre-fermented the day before).
    4. The mixer works for 15 minutes, once you get the dough, let it rise for 40 minutes and then give shape.
    5. Bake the dough for 1 hour.
Then we take it out and let it cool and it is ready for sale.
