C1 - Spain, Tenerife

  • The C1 Teaching and Learning activities meeting took place in February 2018 at IES Geneto in La Laguna, Tenerife.

After a welcome audiovisual presentation with the program for the week, an “icebreaker” activity session was held for the respective knowledge of the participants and subsequent training of work teams. Given the dissemination of the Projects, interviews were conducted with the participating students within the daily broadcast of the IES Geneto School "Genteneto Radio", ensuring that the project gains presence among students, in particular, and the entire educational community, in general.

Next, the students, who had created a “needs analysis” for their respective countries, presented them in a large plenary session to all other participants. These results would then be the subject of work in mixed international groups. There was also a talk-workshop given by the Manager in the Sustainable Construction Cluster, who graduated in Environmental Sciences, on the topic “Smart Cities and the residential transformation of our cities".

Several excursions and workshops were carried out on this subject, for example, the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER) was visited, including several bioclimatic houses resulting from an architectural competition. Located in front of the sea and next to the Pelada Mountain Natural Monument, these homes constitute energy-self-sufficient bioclimatic urbanization with ZERO CO2 emissions. Designed taking into account the climatic conditions of the place, they take advantage of the available resources (sun, wind, water, vegetation) to reduce energy consumption and minimize CO2 emissions. In that sense, solar radiation is used inside the houses, through the careful design of the windows following the solar path, in the form of heat and visible light, also through the orientation and thickness of the walls, to take advantage of its thermal inertia. The speed of the air is used inside the houses, using passive systems as heat sinks and improvement of the natural air circulation.

Within the Teaching and Learning Activities, it was planned to make a trip to the Canary Island of El Hierro that included a tour of the “GORONA DEL VIENTO” hydro-electric-wind station, a unique project of its kind. However, weather conditions prevented the flight from departing, and it was canceled. Instead, presentations were made on the same topic in audio-visual format.

In addition to all of those Project activities, the participants made contact with the specific culture and with the history of the Island of Tenerife and the country, Spain, through organized guided visits to the city of La Laguna, by a professional historian and tourist guide, and another self-guided tour to explore the capital, Santa Cruz, and its monuments. The main cultural activity was a visit to the Teide National Park, with some explanations related to the volcanological implications for living and dwelling on a territory like this one.

On the last day the results of the international groups of the project, which had been developing during the week, were presented. During this meeting, an emblematic logo was designed for the project, which is now transnational for all communication materials used, so we can establish a uniform corporate identity with a high recognition value. Finally, a group analyzed the similarities of the needs analysis of all countries, so that in future meetings students can work on a solution that meets all demands.

In the evaluation process, it was studied what the students have learned about the analytical approach to needs related to living environments and/or other built areas, as well as sustainable construction.
