4.7 Independence Day

  • Ireland.

We do not celebrate an Independence Day.  Ireland has had a long history with our closest neighbout Britain.  One of the most significant parts of this history is Ireland fighting for independence from Britain.  In most recent history this took place over three majoj events; The 1916 Easter Rising, The War of Independence 1919-1921, The Irish Civil War 1922-1923.  Today 26 counties in Ireland form part of the Republic of Ireland, policically independent of Britain, while 6 counties in the North of Ireland remain part of Britain, this is known as Northern Ireland.  Our school, Banagher College, is located in the Republin of Ireland.

We did celebrate the 1916 100th Anniversay in 2016.  This was a huge event across Ireland.  Every school was presented with our National Flag.  We had a week long celebration with events running each day.

The photo below is a list of the events we had to celebrate 1916.

Poster Competition - Poster to show what was happening in Europe in 1916 while Ireland was fighting for its Independence.  This poster won the competiton and 27 of our students travelled to the European Parliament in Strasburg.

Our art students painted this in memory of those that fought in the 1916 Easter Rising.

We reinacted the sceen that took place at the steps of the GPO ( General Post Office) in Dublin City.  Here Padraig Pearse read of the Proclamation of the Irish Republin, declaring Ireland a Republic free from British control.  He stated that a Provisional ( Temporary) Government had been set up.  It wasn't long before the British heard about this and the fighting and shelling began.

We paid tribute to those that fought in the Rising, especially past relatives of our own staff and student community.
