Banagher College, BCCNS is situated in the midlands of Ireland. It is located in a rural setting on the outskirts of the town of Banagher, by the banks of the Shannon. The population of the town is approximately 1,600 people, while our school maintains a student population of approximately 500 students. Students range in age from 12 to 18 and complete a 5 year cycle with an extra optional 6th year mid cycle. Hurling and camoige are our national games which are an important part of our extra curricular activities, as are soccer, badminton, drama and ladies football to name a few. Our school is a new building and is a vital heartbeat to the local community which has been subjected to some very difficult financial times in the wake of the recession. Our students are from a largely agricultural background, with a generally low socio-economic dynamic being the predominant difficulty. We annually welcome many Spanish and German students who come to learn English on a short term basis. Our school has also been enhanced in the last decade with migrants from Poland, Latvia and many corners of Europe. Our school is a school which is growing and leading in the area of mobile journalism and amateur film production. Being involved in this project would provide a range of material for both news production, information pieces and documentary opportunities to our mojos (mobile journalists). Our school continually strives to be a leader in the area of inclusiveness and multiculturalism and the engagement with a project of this nature would add further diversity and growth to our philosophy and school culture. Our participation in EPAS has developed an awareness and understanding of ourselves as being not just citizens of Ireland but citizens of Europe. Projects that we have got involved with have helped extend our knowledge of European countries and further enhanced our IT, communication and thinking skills. We are dedicated to our student’s understanding of their participation and membership in the EU therefore subjects such as CSPE, Religion, Geography, History and multicultural events that we run will be enriched through our own experiences and learning in this project. German, French and Australian exchanges which have traditionally brought such educational and cultural understanding to our staff, students and the wider community will now be built on and extend to lesser well known regions and countries for our school. Tourism both locally and on the Transition Year course is an integral part of our town and our school and developing links with other cultures and countries has always been a focus of our community. German, French and Australian exchanges which have traditionally brought such educational and cultural understanding to our staff, students and the wider community will now be built on and extend to lesser well known regions and countries for our school.
