Sports Week in Poland

  • In the Polish school sport takes a great role and has been in the curricula for many years in the form of lessons, extra classes of handball, volleyball and rollerskating.  However every year we face the problem of weak motivation in older students. That is why we were very eager to participate in the events accompanying the Sports Hero Week in Italy. In September 2018 the sports days were planned around the month of May. Every 2 months long walks around the highlands are organised. We wanted to show it our partners.

Students of 5-8 grades made PowerPoints of favourite sports and famous Polish sportsmen, including the disabled group. All the works were prepared in English. The presentations were shown to other students during English classes and in printed form in the school exchibition.

On the 21st May 2019 our school was visited by sportsmen from a local  integration sports club ATAK, which associates disabled sportsmen playing sitting volleyball, wheelchair rugby, sledge ice hockey, doing athletics, swimming and weightlifting. It is also the organiser of international Paralympics. The aim of the meeting with students from our school was a match of sitting volleyball, which was played by the students for the fits time. Before the match students had a chance to talk to the disabled sitting volleyball players. They asked questions about the rules of playing this sport, they also wanted to know what motivates the sportsmen to do this difficult sports discipline , and finally they inquired about the club’s successes. After the discussion had finished, a few of the students, together with the sportsmen played a match of sitting volleyball. Both teams consisted of a few disabled players and students.

After the match students took part in a meeting with Sylwester Flis, a disabled sledge ice hockey player, a Salt Lake City Olympics Champion (2002), having successes in the USA and Canada and also having a title of the best Olympics match shooter in the Guinness World Records. The sportsman charmed everybody with his sports memories and faith, emphasising the importance of integration.

Our school was also visited by Helena Pilejczyk, who is best known as Olympic Bronze Medal winner on the 1,500 m speed skating  in Squaw Valley (1960). In her long career she achieved 40 Polish skating records and won 37 Polish titles for distance, allround and relay race events. She was born in Elblag and used to be a PE teacher and a trainer in our school. Younger students of 1-3 grades took  part in the meeting. The children listened to her talk about all her successes, her sports memories, motivation and hardship.
