Portugal 🇵🇹
During the lifespan of this project (2018-2021), many were the music classes that were involved from AEMGA-PT. From 5th to 9th grade, students participated in many different ways in the music activities.
QR Challenges
2019-2020: My 6th graders are taking the "QR Challenge"! Working in teams, they have to find the melody hidden on the QR code, answer a few questions, practice how to play it and then record and upload it into Flipgrid. They earn points on ClassDojo!
Painting with sound
2018-2019: My 7th and 8th graders are working on a music project on SOUNDTRAP. The idea is to 'illustrate' a painting with sound or soundscaping a painting based on what we see in it.
Anyone willing to join them?
The paintings chosen are from the Portuguese painter, José de Guimarães. Listen to a couple of examples:
Cacofonia - example
7th graders attempts
Poet drowning - example
8th graders unfinished works:

Learning about the musical instruments via Skype!
2019-2020: Some of my 6th grade classes were fortunate to learn about the musical instruments from the 'real world' by going on a school trip to Casa da Música or attending a lesson of one teacher from Academia de Música de Espinho.
For the classes that did not have that chance, the On the edge MUSIC Team joined forces and worked together to show these students the musical instruments of the orchestra via Skype.
Portugal, Romania and Finland were on the call, but we also connected with other educators from Canada, England and the U.S..
Regarding the traditional musical instruments we connected with Bangladesh, India, Hungary and Russia.
Raising awareness to important issues through music creation
2018-2019: My 6th graders participated in the "World Peace Song" project. They created the lyrics in Portuguese and performed their version of the song with the same name.
2020-2021: My 7th, 8th and 9th grade students created several works (one per class) realated to the 17 United Nations SDGs.
Each class chose one SDG, created the lyrics and rhythmic patterns to go along a given beat (the same for all classes).
We created a sort of a suite. Take a listen.

Here's how we did it:
"Canção à espera de palavras" by Mário Laginha - national competition
2020-2021: PTclass5.3 participated in a competition promoted by the Portuguese Association of Musical Education (APEM). They had to write the lyrics for a song composed by a PT Jazz musician and composer, Mário Laginha. They didn't win, but they learned how to match the lyrics to the rhythm of the melody. Listen to our recording.
"When life gives you lemons,
make lemonade."
- making music WITHOUT musical instruments -
2019-2020: During the 2020 lockdown my 6th graders had several assignments, one of which being to create music WITHOUT musical instruments.
2020-2021: This year my 5th graders and I are out of the music classroom. We don't have any musical instruments at hand, so we're being creative! Take a listen!
Musical presentations with body percussion
We made rain with our hands!
We created a nice rhythm to go along with our "Beat Beat Kit" and "Beat Beat Mix".
"Beat Beat Kit" - body percussion
"Beat Beat Mix" - rhythm with trash
"Melody Mix" - two-notes melodies
"Beat Beat Kit" - a rhythmic sentence to play along
Check out our sound kits!
Learning while playing Genially during lockdown
2020-2021: Organized in teams (in different breakout rooms on Zoom), my 5th graders had fun with a Genially challenge during the second lockdown in Portugal (February and March 2021) meant to recap some of the musical concepts we've been studying.
Creating 'melfies'
2020-2021: My 5th graders are creating 'melfies'.
