the first student exchange in Macedonia

  • On day 1 the visiting students and teachers were warmly welcomed at the Macedonian school by a lot of the school’s teachers, the local Erasmus coordinator as well as the headmistress, with a traditional breaking of bread, which gave all visiting participants a very good first impression of Macedonian culture, hospitality and showed the willingness to work together successfully. This was followed by an extensive cultural program that included different speeches and traditional dancing and singing. A huge variety of local students was involved from the lower grades (2-4) to the higher grades (5-9). After that, the host students got to know their partner students from Portugal, Germany and the Czech Republic in a mix and mingle activity in order to loosen up.

After a healthy lunch, students and teachers of all participating countries went to see the documentary „Honeyland” in order to get to know the traditions and ways of people of rural Macedonia.

On day 2 students and teachers of all participating countries went to visit a local bakery in order to find out how traditional Macedonian bread and pastries are produced. The students were able to observe first hand all the steps necessary, from separating the grain to loading the finished bread onto trucks. Afterwards, the whole group went back to the city center for a guided walking city tour that shed light on the long and eventful history of Macedonia, Skopje and its people.

On day 3 the visiting students and teachers bought some fruit and vegetables at a local market together with the Macedonian coordinator. After that, they all went back to school, met with the local students involved in the project and attended a lecture by a nutritionist, in order to refresh their memories on nutrition and nutrients. This knowledge was then used by the students to create different kinds of fruit and vegetable salads in international groups, which was eaten for lunch afterwards. In the afternoon, the students attended a workshop, again working together in international groups, on the different kinds of nutrition (here: sugarless, saltless, vegetarian, vegan) in order to work out the main characteristics of each kind of nutrition. The results were presented in short oral presentations accompanied by informational posters.

On day 4 students and teachers of all participating countries traveled by bus to Ohrid; an UNESCO world heritage cite located in the southwest of Macedonia at the lake with the same name. Here, the students and teachers learned more about Macedonian history, culture and its people in a second walking city tour. Subsequently, there was a traditional healthy lunch in order to „live and experience” the idea of healthy food and become acquainted with local culture and tradition.
