German open school day 2019

  • On 28th November 2019 the German school had its annual open school day combined with a small Christmas market. Of course, the students of the Erasmus project wanted to contribute something dealing with healthy nutrition.

So, the students brainstormed ideas, came up with some, rejected others and had some lively discussions. In the end, everybody agreed upon two games: (1) recognizing certain fruits and vegetables by touching, smelling or tasting them and (2) guessing how many sugar cubes there are in certain products.

After the brainstorming, the hard work followed. Posters were created, boxes colored and prepared for the guessing of the different foods. With the help of the internet, the amount of sugar in certain products was looked up which quite often led to some fruitful epiphanies: What? SO much sugar is in one bottle of Coke? - Impressive! There's hardly any sugar in crisps, but a lot of fat, though!

On Thursday afternoon at 4 pm. it was time. The IGS Bertolt Brecht opened their doors for all interested people. All afternoon long, students, teachers and parents were able to try and feel a pomegranate, taste a kiwi or smell a lemon.

Sometimes, that was much harder than it might sound. Especially the assumed and the actual number of sugar cubes in a certain products was worlds apart. And not just when students were guessing!

So, in the end, the afternoon was entertaining as well as educational for all.

And, of course, the opportunity was used to advertise the Erasmus+ project.
