Project evaluation trip to the János Esterházy Pilgrimage Centre

On 22 June 2021, Erasmus+ students and teachers visited the János Esterházy Pilgrimage Centre in Alsóbodok (near Nitra, Slovakia), which commemorates the tragic life and legacy of János Esterházy.
János Esterházy was an outstanding Hungarian statesman, a martyr of the 20th century. He was born in Alsóbodok, but after the Treaty of Trianon his residence, which had belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary, was annexed to Czechoslovakia. Although he was offered a parliamentary seat in Hungary, he never left his homeland. He wanted to help the Hungarians who remained here and to support the Hungarian-Slovak reconciliation. He alone did not vote on a bill allowing the deportation of Jews in the Slovak parliament. Although his work is mainly related to Upper Hungary (in present-day Slovakia), Esterházy lived in Budapest several times, and many monuments in the capital are connected to him. Among others, he saved the lives of thousands of Slovak, Hungarian and Jewish people and helped evacuate more than a hundred thousand Poles to Hungary and Budapest.
The Arrow Cross Party arrested him in Budapest before Christmas 1944. After World War II, the Slovak government extradited him to the Soviet Union as a "war criminal" on fabricated charges, where he was sentenced to forced labour and taken to a Siberian labour camp. In his absence, a Slovak court sentenced him to death by hanging in 1947. In 1949, the Soviets extradited him to the Czechoslovak authorities. Finally, on 8 March 1957, he died in the Mirov prison in Moravia.

The trip was a reward trip for students participating in the Erasmus project. During the day, the Erasmus+ project was evaluated during a celebratory lunch in the conference room of the pilgrimage centre.

The history of Komárno - online conference

What do students want after months of homeschooling? Encounters, social contacts and a touch of normality. The Erasmus project was able to facilitate an international exchange and new impressions with a virtual student "journey".

It was "a great experience to do something international, i.e. to work with students from another country," is how Alexander Schropp, a student at Gymnasium Waldkraiburg, summed up the project day. After a virtual walk through the town on the Slovak-Hungarian border, the Slovakian students took the Waldkraiburg students and teachers back in time with the help of their grandparents' old photos, bringing history to life. In bilingual teams, podcasts they had created themselves were shown in English or German language presentations, commented on and thus very personally conveyed the lives of the grandparents over the course of time and the historical events, which showed the Waldkraiburg students numerous overlaps with our local German history. A "talking" book with numerous video clips on the history of the town left a vivid impression of the twin town.

The German-Slovak student groups formed in advance to prepare for the day were able to prepare for the project very independently: There was skype and the work results were discussed via video chat. Regina Weidl and Andreas Nicklbauer, who are in charge of the project at the Gymnasium Waldkraiburg, were very pleased with the dedicated work of the participating students from Class 9A. The intensive work with each other had created what is actually the Erasmus project: a real European cooperation that shows our common interests and roots. And what is particularly pleasing, the longed-for encounter as a "change from the daily routine of homeschooling", as Lena Schubert describes it, has already led to the first invitations to Slovakia. Let's hope that real encounters can deepen the freshly established contacts as soon as possible!

“Old family pictures telling a story”

The students taking part in the Erasmus+ project have made a questionnaire, through which they have made an interview about the childhood of their grand – great-grandparents, about the events of the past. Their lives were greatly influenced by historical events, such as the 2nd World War, the Treaty of Trianon, the deportation of Hungarians and the Soviet regime. Very nice projects were made, the historical background is taking shape through the lives of ordinary people. The work of the students serves as a reminder for future generations, what a huge thing it is, that since 1989 we have been living in peace and democracy, and most of it is thanks to the European Union. Please accept these collages with love!

LOGO DESIGN CONTEST – Interview with Eszter Sukola

Dear Erasmus+ students and teachers! We would like to introduce Eszter Sukola who designed the winner logo for our project. Our reporter is Sára Török - who is an engaged member of our school newspaper. Read this interview with pleasure J!

Please introduce yourself in a few words!

Hi! My name is Eszter Sukola. I'm seventeen years old and I live in Slovakia. I'm from a small village called Szőgyén, but during the week I live in a dorm in Komárom with some of my classmates. Here I visit a religious high school - Marianum. I'm interested in reading and drawing. In my free time I hang out with my friends. My favourite subject is Hungarian literature and of course Art. The language of teaching in our school is Hungarian. We learn three foreign languages: English, German and Slovak.

When did you start drawing? Are you going to an Artschool? Who helps you unfolding your talent?

I have been interested in drawing since my childhood. When I was six years old and finally started school, my parents enrolled me to an art school. I went there once a week and I really enjoyed it. Now I'm on a higher level. I go there every Thursday afternoon. I have to be thankful to all my art teachers, who inspired me and gave me experiences.

What kind of technique do you like in drawing? What are your favourite topics?

I mostly prefer painting. I usually use acrylic paint or aniline, but I sometimes used to paint on canvas with oil paint. The latter is pretty time-consuming for me.

How did you hear about the drawing competition?

I heard about the competition from our art teacher in my high school, who encouraged me to take a chance.

How did you create your work? What happened to it from the first thought to the realization?

I decided to create a progresso drawing. I heard a lot about the project from my classmates, who travelled to Germany with ERASMUS+. They said it was a good adventure, so I got the idea to draw a hippie bus full of suitcases. When I finished the drawing, I was nearly out of the time.

What was your reaction when you heard that your picture is the winner?

When I heard that I won the competition I was surprised. It was a good feeling and I was glad, because I tried it.

What do you expect from Erasmus + project?

Now I'm really interested about the project. I hope I can get useful experiences. I would like to learn about other cultures and to overcome the language barriers. It would also be fun to meet new people from different countries.

Thank you for the interview. I congratulate you once again on the good result!

FEBRUARY 2020: Getting ready to the project meeting in Luxembourg – Knowing the history and culture of Luxembourg

Students travelling to Luxembourg have created several presentations, which include a rich content of video and photo materials. The topics are the following:

    1. The stateform, geography, climate, population and religions of Luxembourg
    2. The history of Luxembourg to the present day
    3. The culture, famous people, art, musicians and artists of Luxembourg
    4. Luxembourg, the capital city´s history and its most famous sights

Before the project meeting in Luxembourg our students have learnt about the state, which is a relatively foreign state for them. They did it so on History, German, English and Geography lessons. These lessons were held by the students travelling to Luxembourg, they demonstrated their presentations and with the help of some worksheets, they tested their listeners´ memory. The students of our secondary grammar school were proven to be very smart teachers, the pupils in junior high school were certainly glad to have new teachers J. Luxembourg has totally charmed them.

Here are the presentations and worksheets to the project work:

DECEMBER 2020: TEA PARTY WITH THE GRANDPARENTS

TOPIC: CHRISTMAS MEMORIES: Celebrating of Christmas in the past and nowdays in our region

Erasmus students are working on the presentation of our feasts and traditions in  German and History lessons. We did a questionnaire for the grand and great-grandparents about their childhood and celebrating Christmas in their childhood. We invited them for a tea party to the school. They answered our questions, it was a really nice afternoon, we spent a nice time together. This questionnaire made also in Hungarian language for all students of our school. They will write an essay in Hungarian language with the title "How do our grandparents and great-grandparents celebrate Christmas". The best essays will be published in our school newspaper as well.
