Limericks (poetry)

  • Lets have fun with Limericks

"A limerick is a form of poetry, especially one in five-line, predominantly anapestic meter with a strict rhyme scheme (AABBA), which is sometimes obscene with humorous intent. The first, second and fifth lines are usually longer than the third and fourth. The oldest attested text in this form is a Latin prayer by  Thomas Aquinas of the 13th century.

    Sit vitiorum meorum evacuatio
    Concupiscentae et libidinis exterminatio,
    Caritatis et patientiae,
    Humilitatis et obedientiae,
    Omniumque virtutum augmentatio.

The form appeared in England in the early years of the 18th century.

The following limerick is of unknown origin:

    The limerick packs laughs anatomical
Into space that is quite economical.
But the good ones I've seen
    So seldom are clean
And the clean ones so seldom are comical." [ source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limerick_(poetry)]
