C3 - Short term student exchange - Angra do Heroísmo, Azores, April 2019

  • Trip Journal | Day 1, Monday

The day started with the arrival of the pupils and teachers to see the hoisting of the eTwinning flag, Eco-Schools flag and Europe flag. Then we all went to the auditorium for the presentation of the project, followed by a dance performance executed by a conservatorium pupil and a musical performance presented by the Portuguese pupils involved in the project.

After this, we started the Peddy-Papper activity with the foreign students. The activity’s aim was to provide a short guide through the school in a fun way. It ended at the Principal's Office where the Principal welcomed the pupils and the teachers. There we all had a "coffee-break" before the departure to the Whale Museum.

At 11 o'clock we arrived at the Whale Museum in São Mateus, where we heard a brief History of Whale Hunting in the Island, especially in the last century before the closing of the factory (1955). Then we went to Negrito to see where they used to cook the whales after the hunting.

After lunch, we went to the City Hall, where we were welcomed by the President of the City Hall, and he gave us an overwhelming speech about the History of Angra do Heroísmo and about the Island in general.

Then, we went to the Marina to go to our boat trip. It didn't last that long because we just went to "Ilhéu das Cabras" (Coats' Islet).

I think that we speak for the majority when we say that the highest point of the day was definitely the boat trip!

Trip Journal | Day 2, Tuesday

On Tuesday morning we listened this EDA’S speech about how both Eolic and Geothermal Energy are used in our island.  We visited the Eolic Park and we learnt about the process of converting the wind into Eolic Energy. It was so windy that it became difficult for us to walk but it was still fun. After that we went to the Geothermal Plant, visited the facilities and learnt how Geothermal Energy is produced.

In the afternoon, we went to Gruta do Natal, a beautiful cave that used to host Christmas Celebrations in the past. It was awesome! Then we arrived at Algar do Carvão (one of the few volcanos, in the world, where you can actually get into). We had the opportunity to observe all the small and beautiful details of its geological formation. Afterwards we were able to explore Furnas do Enxofre where there is lots of gas release, one of them is Methane.

It was an awesome day and we had a great time spending this Tuesday all together while learning lots of interesting things!

    Trip Journal| Day 3, Wednesday

On April 3rd 2019, Wednesday, the group met at school around 8 in the morning. Then we went by bus to Alto das Covas, after that we went on foot to the Montanheiros Museum, but for construction we couldn’t do the visit so we went directly on foot to Relvão Park. There the students could rest and enjoy the landscape. After some time, the group went to the picnic area of Monte Brasil to eat lunch provided by the school. After lunch the Portuguese students guided the rest of the group to the Museum of Angra where they made thematic activities. The students were divided into 2 groups, Portuguese on one side and foreigners on the other. The foreigners went for a guided tour of the museum. All performed some proposed activities such as fish scale and candle decoration. The activities ended around 4pm. The trip was good and we sawed a lot of interesting things I thing we will never forget.

Trip Journal | Day 4, Thursday

On Thursday, when we arrived at school we were divided into groups, and each group had an important task.

We made a poster and video, which would be part of the final exhibition of the best project of the world!

We made several posters one of them was where every element of each country left its comments and opinion about our country, Portugal.

Together, teachers and students, organized the exhibition by thinking how it would be better to settle it.

As the Finish were going back home on Friday morning, they started painting the logo on an outside school wall and finished all their tasks.

In the end we set up a resume-video of all the week spent with our friends. It was an amazing week and we made unforgettable friendships.

Trip Journal | Day 5, Friday

On friday morning, the last day, the Finnish students left and we were very sad that they had to leave so early.

The remaining students (from Croatia, Poland and France) and us spent the day together, showing some activities in the school such as the Tomás de Borba Got Talent (with some talented students participating) and also the Sports Championship between schools in Terceira Island. These are the kind of activities that we have in the end of each term.

We also finished painting the logo that was started by the Finnish the day before. It is a symbol that will remind us of this incredible week.
