ACTIVITY :
1. Students create small books (Freinet books handmade or using pc; template is in this page and directions on the video posted in this page) to offer to their fellow students.
First page (cover) the title "Offering a booky friend to a read(y) friend" and student's name
Last page (cover) better to have eTwinning logo and our project's logo.
Freinet books have 6 more pages to be created by students. Every student in his/her small book writes about ONE WORD (Respect, Friendship, Freedom, Dignity, Love, Peace, Identity, Diversity, Equality, Tolerance, etc). When the books are finished are exchanged among students (in a box and they pick randomly). They can create as many books as they wish. Extra books are offered to school library to be shared to other students.
OR (WE DECIDED THIS DURING 2nd TEACHERS MEETING)
2. We create small books as described in (1) BUT each school picks ONLY ONE idea/word (eg Greece picks freedom means that all Greek students create small books dedicated to freedom and so on). Partners choose one idea also.Content of the small books can be Quotes (it would be nice to have photos from this activity with students searching for quotes in some books.., drawings, photos from the web....anything)
Small books are uploaded in Dotstorming (link here) and are voted by ALL the students of this project
Finally a LIVE EVENT among classes where 3 students per school will present their creations will be on 15 FEBRUARY at 10 CET (confirm your participation in this page till 10 February)
Also if you photocopy the A4 papers, then you can have more small books and IF partners want one more postal exchange you could post some of these to the partners.
Photos or pdf of the small books are added in a) Materials in Shared folder "IBGD" b)in Twinboard under this page and c) in DotstormingDotstorming
OR (extra idea with the small books)
3. (Teachers can involve some of their students in this activity instead of the whole class): Same as 1 but the ONE idea should be taken from the "Knight with the rusty Armor" so in pages students will write some lines from the book that they believe that is a reference to this idea. The rest of the pages could be drawings, word clouds, or their interpretation of the idea or anything else freestyle. These books are exchanged in class (if the whole team participates in this activity or offered to the school's library and exhibited there.
OR (extra idea with the small books)
4. Same as 1 but the subject of the book is promoting one book students have chosen from their school's Library. Students visit their school library. They pick a book that they have read and they work on the promotion of this book through a small Freinet book. So the title of the book will be "Come to our School's Library and ask for..." and in the second page they write the title of the book, author, they include a photo of the cover and a small description or some lines that they think that will add to book's promotion. These small books are exhibited at school's corridors, halls (like a treasure hunt but leading to school's library)
Partners can comment about these proposed ideas in the Discussion that follows this page. (we had a discussion during teacher's meeting and we have decided how to work with this)
HOW TO CREATE SMALL BOOKS...
For all these activities we had a test in Petroupoli and here is a "sample" based on the 3rd version-idea of the activity, promoting a book of our School Library. This "sample" -small book is created in Office Publisher (software comes in Microsoft Office package and you have a template (link to download the Publisher file ) :
small-book-template.pub
BUT ... small books can be created handmade also. All you need is an A4 paper folded in 8. Here is the template for hand-made book
and a photo and a video about the way we fold the book.
***ADDITIONAL/OPTIONAL ideas for celebrating the IBGD:
- students to exchange books in class as presents to each other but this depends on teachers and students (if they can afford this)
- or teachers and librarians contact local bookstores or publishing houses and ask for free books for their school libraries
- or teachers ask their students to offer one of their books and then they offer all the books gathered to a local organization (refugees, orphanαge etc)
- or class visits a rest home (a facility for the elderly) and students read to old people there a story...
