Cyril and Methodius
The Saint Brothers Cyril and Methodius were Christian theologists and missionaries. They are the creators of the Glagolitic alphabet, and with this exact creation they influenced the Slavs for which they received the title “Apostles of the Slavs”.
After their death, some of their many students continued their missionary work.
Missions:
863 – 867 – The brothers’ mission by the Prince of Moravia, Rostislav.
(14th February, 869 Cyril dies in Rome.)
873 – Methodology by Pope John VIII of Archbishop of Greater Moravia.
(6th April, 885 Methodius dies in Velegra.)
886 – Discharging the disciplines of the brothers by their students Gorazd, Clement, Sava, Naum and Angelarius from Great Moravia.
After 886 – Their student Clement’s activity in the Southwestern Bulgarian lands.
IX Century – Creation of the Cyrillic alphabet on the basis of the Greek Uniform (Headline) alphabet.
The day of the Saint brothers Cyril and Methodius was celebrated as early as the XI century as the day of the “Bulgarian Scripts (alphabet)”.
Today, we celebrate it on the 24th May known as the “Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavic script day”. The Saint brothers are patrons of the Bulgarian library and they have a monument in front of it.

Bulgaria - Hristo Botev.docx
Hristo Botev
We have chosen Hristo Botev. He was born with the name Hristo Botyov Petkov and was a very famous revolutionary poet. He played a key role in Bulgarian history and was considered a national hero.
He was born in Kalofer, Bulgaria. His father was a teacher and he influenced Botev during his youth a lot. He was deeply impressed by Russian poetry and because of this, his political views soon started to take shape.
In 1875 Botev published his writings in a book called “Songs and Poems”.
He organised a rebellious group that went by the name “The Botev Rebels” that fought for Bulgaria’s freedom and participated in many secret committees against the Ottomans.
His monument is located on top of mount Okoltchitza in memory of him, his rebels and all who fell fighting.
Bulgaria - Vasil Levski.docx
Vasil Levski
Vasil Ivanov Kunchev was born on July 18th, 1837 in Karlovo, Bulgaria, in the family of Gina Vasileva Karaivanova (his mother) and Ivan Kunchev Ivanov (his father) and their five children.
He was the most famous and important Bulgarian revolutionary, and is a Bulgarian national hero until today. He is the founder of the Internal Bulgarian Revolutionary Organisation, and he orchestrated a nationwide uprising through secret committees.
Unfortunately, he was caught on December 26th, 1872 by Kakrinsko Hanche near Lovech, Bulgaria. The Ottoman court sentenced him to death by hanging.
On the 18th February 1873 (6th February by old style) he was publicly hanged and executed in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Today, in Sofia there is a big monument of Vasil Levski exactly on the place where the he was publicly executed.

Charlemagne
The Latin name of Charlemagne is Carolus Magnus which means Charles the Great.
He was born in AD 742 and died in AD 814,
He was king of the Franks and Emperor of the West. He founded the Holy Roman Empire. This was very well organised where people had the same language, the same money and the same religion. He created the first school where students learned how to be good administrators.

Napoléon
Napoleon Bonaparte was the Emperor of the French and also the King of Italy. He became Napoléon I in 1804. His actions shaped European politics in the early 19th century.
He was born in 1769 and died in 1821.
His power was personal and authoritarian.
During his reign, Napoleon I conquered half of Europe by winning great victories such as Austerlitz, Iena, Friedland and Wagram.
But from 1812, the defeats of Napoleon and his authoritarian regime made him unpopular.
In 1814, the Emperor abdicated for the first time before regaining power during the ‘Hundred Days’.
However he was finally defeated at Waterloo in Belgium on
June 18, 1815.

Louis XIV
Louis XIV, known as ‘The Sun King’, was the most famous king of the French History. He was born in 1638 and died in 1715.
He compared himself to the most powerful and most brilliant of the stars: the sun. During his reign, the royal power became absolute (without limits): the king governed alone and decided everything.
Louis XIV led many wars against European kings. He won a lot of victories.
He promoted the arts. He moved to Versailles where he organized shows and sumptuous parties.
His reign of 72 years is the longest record of any monarch in European History.
He made France a powerful country. But when he died, he left an impoverished country and a disgruntled people.
