    BULGARIAN TRADITIONS:

    Epiphany

Jordan is one of the biggest Christian holidays. It is celebrated on January 6. This is the day when John the Baptist baptized in the Jordan River, Jesus Christ. After the mystery of the Epiphany people saw with their own eyes the Christian trinity of Father (voice), Spirit (dove perched on the shoulder of Christ) and Son (earthly man) and started to believe, so the day is also called Epiphany. To this day it is believed that the days are dangerous and roam the earth goblins and demons - are called "Dirty Days" heathens, Karakonzhduvi days. With the baptism of the water world is a safe place to live.

The night before Epiphany is believed that the sky opens and what you want will come true. The church service is performed and accompanied by a solemn procession, the priest goes to the river or pond and throws the cross into the water. Traditionally odd number of guys throw to catch him. It is believed that that first who catch the cross will be very strong and healthy during the year. People bring water at home to sprinkle rooms for health. It is believed that if the cross into the water freezes, the year will be fertile and the people - healthy. In Southwestern Bulgaria the day is called Men's Day - because only grooms and boys up to 1 year bathe.

Of Jordan day the women knead three ritual bread in whose involvement benefits the rest of the old holy water. One is for home, the second is for the guests, and the third is left at the door of the house with copper wine to passers-by.

    Beliefs about Jordan:

If Jordan's weather is cold and dry - the year will be good and fertile.

If the cross thrown into the water freezes, the year will be healthy and fertile.

It is believed that the one who pulled the cross out of the water will be healthy and happy.

The night before the holiday sky opens and if at this time he wishes and wants something, it will be fulfilled.

Ill people should go with their clothes into the water to heal and the girls should wash their faces to be beautiful

On 6th January Name day celebrated Yordan, Yordanka, Bogdan, Dancho, Danka, fights, Bogomil, Clear, Nayden, Bozhidar Bozhidara.

There is a town in Bulgaria - Kalofer with unique traditions on 6th January. Early in the morning men from Kalofer go into the freezing river, the priest throws the cross and the man who takes it, gives it to the youngest participant. Afterthat the men play Bulgarian national dance "horo" in the water. This year - 6.01.2017 the weather is very cold - the temperature is -8 to -3 degrees.
