The word Democracy is Greek, a composite of demos ( municipality ) and kratos. Since demos can be translated as “the people”  and kratos as “power/ rule ,” democracy has a root meaning of “the power of the people.”.Its cornerstones include freedom of assembly and speech, social equality, participation in the commons and the right to life. It was established by Cleisthenes for the first time, in Greece (in Athens in particular) in 508 BC.

Athenian democracy had the form of a direct democracy,.All eligible citizens were allowed to speak and vote in the assembly, which set the laws of the city state. However, Athenian citizenship excluded women, slaves, foreigners (μέτοικοι / métoikoi), and youths below the age of military service.

The notion of democracy has evolved over time considerably. In reality in all democratic governments throughout ancient and modern history, democratic citizenship was consisted of an elite class until full enfranchisement was won for all adult citizens in most modern democracies through the suffrage  movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. The most common form of democracy today is a representative democracy, where the people elect government officials to govern on their behalf such as in a parliamentary or presidential democracy.

"Democracy,is the state where power comes from the people, is exercised by the people and serves the interests of the people."

                                                                     Abraham Lincoln
