Apple varieties cultivated in Greece

  • There are more than 7000 varieties of apples grown worldwide.

    The Greek team researched and presents the ones that are popular in our country.

     

    Firiki

    This variety of apple, firiki, originates in the Black Sea. In Greece it is widely cultivated in the region of Pelio since the 18th century. It is small in size, has a rounded shape and its colour can vary between green-yellow and red, while it contains a lot of sugar and has a unique aroma. The more red this apple is the tastier and better it is, and it should be eaten as it is and not peeled otherwise it looses its nutrients. It can be cropped every two years and it becomes a big tree.  It is suggested in diets intended to loose weight as it is a source of vitamins and antioxidants. It is classified as a  PDO* product.

     

     

     

     

     

    Ananas reinette

    Ananas Reinette is an old variety probably of Dutch origin first recorded in 1821. Nowadays, it is mostly cultivated in the Rhineland. It is medium in size, its color is red with ombre green outside and in the inside it has golden yellow skin with russet freckles. Its dense flesh is crispy, juicy , yellowish and white. Its sweet sharp taste is due to his origin which is related to pineapples, as the name implies.

     

     

     

     

     

    Starking Delicious Zagorin

    This variety originates in Greece and more specifically in a greek village called Zagora.. It is a large fruit with a round-elongated shape.. Its colour is intense red and it has an aromatic flavor. Its harvesting is done from early September to mid-October but can be maintained very well until early summer. It is classified as a  PDO* product.   

     

     

     

     

     

    Gala
    The variety Gala originates in New Zealand since 1930. Nowadays it is widely cultivated in the UK and New Zealand. Gala apples are covered in a thin yellow to orange skin, highlighted with pink to red stripes that vary in hue dependent upon the apples maturity. Their dense flesh is creamy yellow and crisp, offering a mildly sweet flavor and flora aroma.
     

     

     

     

     

    Fuji

    The variety Fuji originates in the Aomori region of Japan. Nowadays it is also widely cultivated  at the United States. It is typically round and range from large to very large, averaging 75 mm in diameter. Fuji apples are maintained for a longer period compared to other apples, even without refrigeration. With refrigeration, Fuji apples can remain fresh for up to a year.

     

     

     

     

    Golden Delicious

    This variety originates in West Virgina,United States. Nowadays , it is planted in all the major warm apple growing areas of the world. It has  medium size and its skin is yellowish- green and it  has also a sweet flavor.It is prone to bruising and shriveling, so it needs careful handling and storage. It is harvested from autumn through winter. It is an excellent apple for eating out of hand, adding to salads, and making into applesauce.

    This variety originates in Greece and more specifically in Tripoli, Arcadia which is the only place where they are cultivated. The apples are big  in size, they have a red-golden colour and they are known for their quality to maintain their characteristics even after March-April . Its taste and aroma are special without being too sweet. It is classified as a  PDO* product.

     

     

     

     

    Jonagold (Jonag)

    This variety originates in New York State and it was discovered at 1968. It is widely grown and it is not limited to the warm apple regions. As a consequence it is widely cultivated in Western Europe, especially in Belgium. It is large in size and it varies in colors from greenish yellow to rosy orange  ( its colors depends on the strain and the temperature the apples are grown in ). Its aroma is like honey’s ,very alike the scent of the Golden Delicious and ιts flesh is crispy and juicy. Its nutritional value is high because it offers a small amount of vitamins A and C as well as pectin, a beneficial fiber. This dietary fiber has been shown to reduce the body's cholesterol level and slow glucose metabolism in diabetics.

     

     

     

    Granny  Smith

    This variety originates in Australia. Nowadays, it is widely cultivated in New Zealand, France and in the United states. It is medium in size, it has light green skin and it is exceptionally crispy and juicy. Its exterior is green with a slight pink blush and its interior is firm, bright and white. It also has a relatively low sugar contect, which is the reason for its very sour flavour. This variety contains antioxidants that improve health as they boast the highest concetration of phenols amongst the apples’ breeds.

    Kastoria is a region with a long tradition in the production of apples. The varieties cultivated there, are Starkin, Golden Delicious, Jonagold and Granny Smith. These varieties are classifies as PGI* because of their impact to the local community. For the people of Kastoria their cultivation is not only an economic component , but it also expresses something more important ,that is linked to the life and history of the place.

     

     

     

     

     

    Some info about apple cultivation in Greece

    There are approximately 124700 km² hectares currently cultivated for apples in Greece. The main producing areas include the prefectures of Kastoria,Pella, and Imathia in Macedonia; Volos, Larissa, Pelion, and Kissavos in Thessaly; Arcadia in Peloponnese. Almost 56 percent of Greek apple orchards consist of red varieties, predominately Red Delicious group. The green varieties (mostly Granny Smith) follow with 16 percent, and the yellow varieties (particularly Golden Delicious) with 9 percent. The remaining 19 percent of cultivated orchards are planted with Fuji, Gala, Jonagold, etc .

     

    *PDO: Protected Designation of Origin is a name which identifies a product originating in a specific place, region or a country whose quality or characteristics are essentially or exclusively due to a particular geographical environment with its inherent natural and human factors and the production steps of which all take place in the defined geographical area.

     

    *PGI: A protected geographical indication (PGI) is a name or sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin (e.g. a town, region, or country). The use of a protected  geographical indication may act as a certification that the product possesses certain qualities, is made according to traditional methods, or enjoys a certain reputation, due to its geographical origin.
