Potions is a core class and subject at Hogwarts and SMILE.
Potion Master: Mrs. Nederita
- what are the names of some of the Hogwarts most popular potions,
- how to change the colour of your potion and what is the science behind it,
- how to create your own rainbow and what is the scientific explanation,
- how to make a Motion potion, that will make the creatures move and the science behind the Motion Potion trick
- a SMILE Felicitas Potion which is a potion that makes a person HAPPY
You have all contributed in the Twin Board below with ingredients that make you as an individual happy. Turns out there are things that generally make people happy. This is why we voted to see which of the ingredients proposed by you make other people happy to create a potion that would work with everyone.
So... here is the potion we created together.
Before we start mixin' and learning, let's see if you can solve a riddle.
Danger lies before you, while safety lies behind,
Two of us will help you, whichever you would find,
One among us seven will let you move ahead,
Another will transport the drinker back instead,
Two among our number hold only nettle wine,
Three of us are killers, waiting hidden in line.
Choose, unless you wish to stay here forevermore,
To help you in your choice, we give you these clues four:
First, however slyly the poison tries to hide
You will always find some on nettle wine's left side;
Second, different are those who stand at either end,
But if you would move onward, neither is your friend;
Third, as you see clearly, all are different size,
Neither dwarf nor giant holds death in their insides;
Fourth, the second left and the second on the right
Are twins once you taste them, though different at first sight.
-- The Potion Riddle
This is the Riddle of the Potions that is the last challenge faced by Harry and Hermione before entering the chamber where the Philosopher’s Stone is kept safely hidden in the Mirror of Erised. Hermione solved it and they successfully entered the Philosopher's Stone Chamber.
Here is a SMILE challenge for you. The potions on my shelf have been shuffled and the labels lost. You can sort them out and label them by reading attentively the clues below and pass one task from your OWL exam on Potions.
Label the potions
There are 2 acids, 2 neutral and 1 base substances.
There are 3 magic potions an antidote and a poison. The last vial in the row is a magic potion.
There is a deadly poison among the vials – the Basilisk Venom. It is a blue in colour substance that is either the first or the last one just as the Polyjuice Potion is. Polyjuice potion is a purple substance that will transform you in anyone you wish. If you mistake the Basilisk Venom for the Polyjuice Potion – it can cost you a life. Beware! Analyse and label the vials correctly.
The Phoenix Tears is a green, base substance that is the only antidote to the Basilisk Venom.
The Veritaserum is a magic cream-coloured liquid, an acid that is between the purple and the green potions.
The Felix Felicis is a neutral magic substance that is yellow and is next to the green potion. It is the next to the antidote.
For this activity you can earn:
- 5 white magic beans for guessing what potion is in vials 1,2,3,4,5
- 1 green bean for each correct label and colour of the other vials.
Points will be granted to your house upon sending the results through Twin Mail to Mrs Nederita. If you don't know how to send a Twin Mail, see the Tutorial below.

For each correct answer you will get ablack bean
Choose an experiment from the ones suggested below.
Gather your supplies.
Cover your table with a plastic table cloth.
Wear safety goggles.
Get started with your experiments!
P.S. Record the experiment on your phone or take a picture and share in the Forum below. If it is a video, it needs to be uploaded on Youtube first. If you cannot upload your video all by yourself, don't worry. Ask your teacher for help. Make sure you upload the video on the youtube as unlisted. Also, your face doesn't necessarily have to be in the video. Make it so the jars, ingredients and your hands are in focus. We care about your privacy!
Experiment 1
MAGIC COLOUR CHANGING POTION
Supplies:
SMILE World name | Muggle World name |
Moon frog brain | one red cabbage |
Dragon bones powder | sodium bicarbonate |
Veritaserum | vinegar |
Worm Guts | Dishwashing liquid |
4 clean, empty jars water (aproximatelly one and a half liters) spoons |
Instructions:
1. Pour boiling water over a small Moon frog brain. Boil it for about half an hour. You will get a blue or purple liquid
2. Put the liquid that you get into the 4 jars. Dilute it so that you get different hues of blue/purple.
3. Add a small amount of veritas serum in each of the jars. See how the colour changes.
4. Add some Dragon bones powder. Observe the colour. Did it change?
5. Try adding some worm guts. Did it change the colour?
6. You can go ahead and alternate in adding the three ingredients (Dragon Bones powder, Veritas Serum and Worm guts) further to see the changes.
So, what’s the science behind the fun and magic of the colour changing “potions”?
It’s actually pretty simple to explain although younger kids won’t yet understand the meaning of some of the more scientific words.
Cabbage water = an indicator
Vinegar = an acid
Bicarbonate of Soda (baking soda) = an alkaline
The cabbage water is an indicator which can show how acid or alkaline a liquid is when it is added to it. A chemical reaction takes place which causes it to change colour. Scientists take this one step further and use PH test strips to dip into liquids and take a look at the colour which shows up.

Experiment 2
MAGIC RAINBOW
Supplies:
SMILE World name | Muggle World name |
Pygmy Puff droppings | Skittles or M&Ms |
1 clean plate, that is slightly sloped in towards the middle water (the hotter the better) |
Instructions:
1. Place your Skittles in a circle around your dish.
2. Add water in the middle. Add enough to go right to the edge of the candy on both sides.
3. Wait thirty seconds to see the colors begin to come out. The color will start dissolving away from the shell once you add in the warm water.
4. Here is the final result that you should get.

This is a round shape of the rainbow. Can you get any other shapes? Share a photo of the shape you got in the Discussion Forum below.
Experiment 3
MOTION POTION
Supplies:
SMILE World name | Muggle World name |
SMILE colourful worms | Gummy worms |
Dragon bones powder | sodium bicarbonate |
Veritaserum | vinegar |
2 clear cups warm water cutting board sharp knife |
Instructions:
1. Cut the worms in quarters
2. Measure 3 tablespoons of Dragon bones powder and stir them into a glass filled with warm water.
3. Mix the already cut in quarters worms in the cup.
4. Soak the worms in the cup for about 15 min.
5. Fill the second cup with Veritaserum and add 4 worms.
6. Give it a couple of minutes and watch them start to wriggle and dance.
The Science Behind It
When you add the worms soaked in baking soda, the acetic acid in the vinegar reacts with the bicarbonate in the baking soda.
And when an acid and base react, carbon dioxide gas bubbles form.
These gas bubbles form on the gummy worm and as the gas bubbles rise to the surface, they pull the gummy worm up with them, making them wriggle and dance.
As the gas bubbles burst, the worm falls back down until enough bubbles form to pull it back up.
The bubbles will continue to form until all the baking soda on the worm is used up and the worm will stop wiggling.
