    A short biography

    Samantha Cristoforetti, whose nickname is ASTROSAMANTHA, is an Italian European Space Agency astronaut and she is the first Italian woman in space. 

    Samantha  was born in Milan in 1977. When she was 18, she took a US foreign exchange program and attended Space Camp. Later she studied and graduated at Bolzano and Trento University, at the Technical University of Munich, in Toulouse, France at the University in Moscow, Russia.

    She also graduated in Aeronautics Sciences at the Italian Accademia Aeronautica in Pozzuoli, becoming one of the first women to be a lieutenant and fighter pilot in the Italian Air Force.

    On July 2012, the European Space Agency announced that Cristoforetti was set for a long-duration mission. 

    Samantha promised:”I will take virtually anyone who wants to take part in this journey into space” and she started an online daily diary.

    On November 23, 2014, Soyuz TMA-15M carrying Cristoforetti  launched from Kazakhstan for the mission FUTURA and Samantha returned to Earth on 11 June, 2015 
    With her 199 days and 16 hours and 42 minutes, she holds the European and female record of permanence in space in a single flight.

    During the mission, important experiments were carried out concerning nanotechnology and diseases. Moreover Samantha was the first person to taste a cup of espresso coffee in microgravity...

    After mission FUTURA, Samantha has been given technical and management duties at the ESA.
