Fri-07 Challenges VII-IX

  • Workshop 2: “Masters of Interculture-Craft (challenges 7-9)”

    • Challenge 7: Enjoy the taste of the world! (led by J. Fischer) on realizing how much of our food comes from foreign countries and that foreign things are part of our daily life.
      • After collecting the names of a number of fruits in all 4 national languages, the students tried to find out the fruits’ countries of origin and marked them on a map of the world, while also enjoying a selection of dried fruit presented on the teams’ tables. The challenge led to extensive discussion and joint work in all the teams.

    • Challenge 8: Typical!? (led by J. Fischer) on stereotypical outer appearances.
      • Being shown 8 photos of a woman in different outfits the students, individually as well as in their teams, tried to find out which European countries were represented – only by showing different details that trigger stereotypes. The students were surprised about how much our perception is guided by such stereotypes.

    • Challenge 9: Jump! (led by J. Fischer) on selective perception and thinking in drawers.
      • The challenge comprised two activities: (1) Being shown 2 photos with very different settings, the students individually described and judged the photos with respect to whether or not they liked the places depicted. The fact that each of the photos only depicts half of a full setting, thus giving an example of selective perception was surprising.
      • For activity 2 the student teams put together puzzle pieces that listed a common prejudice (1 prejudice per team). Discussion on whether or not the students thought the statements correct were rather surprising, as it showed that many students agreed with at least some of the prejudices.

    • Masters of Interculture-Craft: Upon completion of all 9 challenges the students were presented the insights of all individual challenges as well as the general insight.
