Casa da Memória

  • Casa da Memória - House of Memory - is an interpretation center that exposes, interprets and communicates material and immaterial testimonies of the culture, territory and history of Guimarães.

Before the visit, students were asked to do a research using online tools, books or interviews to local people to discover the identity of Guimarães territory and its people. Then each student prepared a powerpoint presentation with the highlights of the research. The best presentations were selected to share with the Erasmus group during the short term exchange of pupils.

When the Erasmus group arrived, Portuguese students presented the Nicolinas festivities (held by the local students in honor to Saint Nicolas) and king Afonso achievements (first king of Portugal, borned in Guimarães).

During the visit, students had the chance to explore objects connected to the Nicolinas and the legends connected to Afonso reign. The visit was oriented by a museographer that pointed out some important aspects of organizing and cataloguing an exhibition, mainly the preservation and recreation of old photos connected to the memories of the town.

After the visit, Portuguese students worked together with Erasmus group in the building of a sculpture with card boxes, showing different aspects of school in partner countries, in the past and modern days.
