Tolerance Day in Croatia

  • To prepare for this activity teachers discussed with students in class what tolerance means for them. Each students had their own idea, but finally they all agreed that tolerance means accepting and respecting other regardless of their beliefs, race, health condition, skills or what they own. For this occasion we visited a school for special educational needs students in Čakovec. We organised three workshops there. The first one was Reading Corner. A student from our school read out a story about a peacock without feathers, which was followed by a discussion led by our librarian. Afterwards we had an English workshop. Students from our school and students from the SEN school, individually and in pairs, helped by the English teacher, learnt about food, body parts and spoke mini-dialogues from everyday life. Teachers from SEN school held a pottery workshop, where students individually created beautiful Christmas decorations. The aim of this activity was to strengthen students’ cultural awareness and expression, as well as social and civic competences. This visit was a chance to raise the awareness of the fact that we were not all born with same skills, but anyone can overcome obstacles if they try hard enough. Beautiful decorations created by students from both schools are there to prove it.
