5th student exchange in Croatia

  • The 5th student exchange of the third project year took place in September 2017 in the Croatian partner school with the participation of 11 teachers and 35 students from the five partner schools. During the mobility students stayed at host families therefore they got an insight into Croatian culture and way of life.
The students visited lessons with their hosts, therefore they got acquainted with the Croatian educational system and had the opportunity to compare it with their own. Prior to the meeting each country carried out a short 5-10 minute performance of a national work of art (folk tale, poem, short story). During the second day of the meeting students presented their performances to the other teams. Students also cooperated on screenplay writing activities in mixed-nationality groups to write a screenplay for the first part ( divided in three scenes). They talked about the roles, music, props and dialogue. It was very interesting  and it was a good practice for them because they will have to write a screenplay for one part themselves.  The story has been divided among countries: part 1 Croatia, part 2 Hungary, part 3 Italy, part 4 Spain, part 5 Turkey and part 6 Lithuania. Students also had drama workshops with a professional drama teacher from Zagreb. She worked with students on non-verbal communication, improvisation, facial expressions and using their imagination.  They also had the chance to take part in two other workshops  called 'Listen to create' and 'What happened next' They provided a great opportunity to practice their writing skills

Students also took part in a great variety of team games. Sport activities were organized in mixed groups to know each other better on the first day. After a presentation about Hvar and its famous people, the students and teachers had the opportunity to test their knowledge about the island of Hvar in the form of an interactive Kahoot quiz.  Seek and find game : in mixed groups they had to find specific locations around the town and when they did, they got one part of a poem. In the end they had the whole poem.  All the activities were planned in a way that the participants could learn about each other’s cultures and also get an insight into Croatian history and culture. They also had the opportunity to test their language skills in the form of interactive quizzes and comprehension activities. During these activities several different methods were used so the participating teachers could learn about new techniques and exchange good teaching practices.
Parallel to students’ activities, the participating teachers also had opportunities to get an insight into Croatian educational system and the life of their Croatian partner school. Teachers visited lessons, school departments and facilities. They attended an English class, where they could observe and discuss the methods used by the Croatian partners.
During the last evening, the participants took part in a cultural event, where the project partners presented some traditional songs, dances and the Croatian partners exhibited a huge variety of traditional Croatian dishes for tasting. It was really educational and contributed greatly to the cultural enrichment of the students and teachers alike.
During the project meeting many cultural programmes and field trips were organized, such as a visit to  Jelsa. Here the participants visited a library where they were informed about the famous Croatian writers. The project partners also had a chance to visit the second biggest town on the island, Stari Grad, where students could gain first-hand experience on ancient history and culture. The visit was accompanied by English guided tour providing students with invaluable information on the island.
During the mobility teachers also had a meeting with a view to planning the forthcoming activities, they agreed on deadlines and responsibilities.
Events and experiences of the week has been published in the project blog, Twinspace, project website, the local newspaper and on the school website.
All in all it was an inspiring, informative, properly organized and enjoyable learning experience for both students and teachers.
