What do we think about Greek film WORLD APART

    ROBERTS (LV)

In the Greek film ''World Apart'' you can see that the love stays for whole life , because even older people love each other. As it is shown in the film , our personal problems can't stop us love other people. For example - In the first short film ''Boomerang'' , you can see how Farris the Syrian immigrant can still love Dafni , even if there are people who fight against immigrants. Also , you can see that people who truly love , don't care about looks , all they care is about is a good personality , because that is what makes him special. In the film Dafni loved him , because he was nice and saved her. You can see in the film that we shouldn't abuse immigrants , because they are the same people as us , and only our behavior makes us different. We should help each other and imagine if the same happened to us , how would we feel in that situation?

    RENĀRS (LV)

The film started with Dafni and Farris, where Farris saved Dafni from getting mugged, Dafni lost her phone there, but Farris found it and took it. Farris looked through her phone and found pictures of her (It isn’t nice to search through other people’s phones). Later they met again in a bus, started talking and liking each other, it was basically love at first-sight.

Then there are Giorgos and Elise, they both are very hard working people, they met in a bar, got drunk, and things happened later. They both had problems in their families and they both didn’t know anything about each other, it was blind love.

Last couple were Maria and Sebastian, both at a reasonable age, one married and one who was almost married. Maria lived a very unhappy life, problems in family, not rich either, Sebastian on the other hand a happy old fellow, lived without a family, almost no problems, but was alone. Maria  and Sebastian met at a supermarket and both got interested in each other, started to go back there each week, same time same place, stated to have conversations with each other and started to fall in love with each other, it was basically a second chance for love for both of them.

    VALTERS (LV)

The film 'Worlds apart' depicts various types of love, though the best way to describe them all would likely be 'forbidden love'. Dafni falling for a refugee in the first movie, Giorgos falling in love with a woman even though he was married and Maria seeing a young boy who was also a refugee. In all cases, something was technically stopping them from seeing each other, but love is blind, so to say, and they looked past these issues to be together. The movie shows how painful love can be when something gets in its way, and shows that not all relationships are perfect or even really meant to work out - some are destined to fail before they even occur. I believe that a good lesson from these might be that you should only marry and be with someone you truly care about - rushing into something such as marriage and starting a family too early might make you regret it later in your life. It's a big decision which should require more thought than impulse, which can be difficult when such delicate emotions are the subject.

Personally I think, that the aspects of love are performed really good. It's often that parents of teenagers are often against partnere chosen by their kids. I think it's reasonable, because parents want the best for their children. I think love can be found at any age or any nationality. The thing is in your partner, not your partners wealth or nacionality or anything like that. You can be any age to find love. You just got to seek it. And love is a hard thing, it needs commitment. You have to keep fighting for it. You can understand each other just by the look at her or him. There will be a lot of obsticales, but it's worth it.

    KĀRLIS

Love may happen at any age.

There are no limits to nationalty.

People may have obsticles due to their life, but they still can love.

If there is love, nothing will get in the way.

    Language is not an obsticle.

Love of your life might be there where you dont expect.

    Love is unpredictable.

The Greek film is about three love stories, all taking part in Greece. The stories intertsect with each other. The first story, is about a refugee boy, and a girl, falling in love with him because he has saved her. The second story is about a man and a woman, who inexpectedly, seemingly fall in love after a very "interesting" night. The third story is about a Librarian and the mother of the girl from the first story, about how two elderly people seem to fall in love. The man from the second story is appareantly also a part of the big family of this woman.

The film shows us how love can affect people, and how life can take crazy turn-arounds and basically drop you on the head. A refugee boy and a seemingly rich girl, on paper it seems impossible even, but love has its ways. Love is something special and it can take turns in any possible way. It's something beautiful and it should be cherished.

In my opinion that is what this film tries to tell the audience.

    DANIELS (LV)

Whilst I do not support the events of the first part of the movie, I don't see anything wrong with what happened in the other two parts. The only problems that arose were impacts on decision-making at a workplace and relationships whilst being married. Both of which were small, individual problems that affect only a family or a company at best. Refugees affect things on a national level. I dislike refugees and what they bring with them: economical and cultural problems. People from Europe meeting other people from Europe is better than Europeans meeting outsiders, with different cultures and views on life. This may be xenophobic and racist, but it is just human nature to stick together and avoid strangers.

    OPINION OF GREEK STUDENTS

Essay on the Greek film “Another World-Words apart” by Papakaliatis.

    (COOPERATION OF GREEK STUDENTS)

It’s an informative and at the same time touching film that refers to current significant Greek and other European countries social issues through real life stories of young people. It consists of three different stories combined to one.

The first story has to do with a love story between a Greek girl, Daphne, who studies political science in Athens University and a refugee boy from Syria, Farris, who sells different items in the streets and the buses in order to earn his living, while being trapped in Athens after his trespassing in Greece, together with the thousands of refugees from Syria.

Dafni being rescued by him on attack from a gung in the Centre of Athens meets him again on the bus she usually takes to go to University. A strong bond develops between them and they live a love affair which is soon coming to an end after Daphne was shot during a Nazis attack again the refugees’ camp in the old airport. The worst coincidence was that Daphne’s father was in charge of the attackers.

He was a refugee and immigrant’s persecutor because he had repeatedly robbed by foreigners (according to his testimony) and he hated all foreigners. He joined a Nazis-fascistic group and attacked immigrants all over Athens.  His wife contemned his actions and often quarreled with him. He didn’t want to hear a thing. He went on taking part in attacks till the fatal one that his daughter Daphne found her death being shot on spot.

His wife, Maria, started meeting Sebastian, a German historian, while doing her shopping at the cafeteria. She was depressed by her husband’s behavior and actions, not being able to change or stop the catastrophe. Sebastian, a sweet real gentleman, was touched by Maria and showed his interest in her. A strong love affair immerged and Maria found a few moments of joy near him. Undoubtedly she deserved a “second chance” in her life as is the title of the 3rd story in the film.

A very interesting part of the film is in the 2nd story, which is about the effects of economic crises in Greece during the last decade, that has resulting in a great raise of unemployment, lost of thousands of work places, depression of young people losing their jobs, turning upside down their lives and living standards, turning them into living dead people. Despite the actor’s problems, Giorgos happens to fall in love with the woman who was appointed by the owners of the company to purge it through firing 30% of the employees. There is a love affair, that was never expressed by both parts, which was not enough to make tough Elise, to affect her judgment and no matter how difficult her work was, she went on with it, and when finishing her task she took the return flight to her country.

Giorgos’ story is somehow connected to the other two stories as he happens to read Sebastian’s book “Second Chance” which he had borrowed by him in the National Library where Sebastian worked for a while perhaps during an inquiry of his. The scene at the National Library is the first and last scene of the film, a place of knowledge and inspiration.

The film is, no doubt, revealing of the bad situation that Greece has been trough because of the economic crises. It seems that everything that people have worked during all their lives could be broken down and vanished in a night. This hasn’t been easy to handle. So the number of suicides has increased as has bad psychology and depression of Greek people. Thousands have lost their jobs and either immigrated to other countries, or being unable to start again, they have fallen in a deep sentimental gap, that very difficult will manage to exit.

We hope that our politicians, in cooperation with the other European Countries, will find the path towards an agreement that will allow growth to return to Greece and put an end to this embarrassing situation that deprives the country of its youth, who flee away from distress with hope for a better future somewhere abroad.  We hope governments and the powerful of the World will find the way for stopping the countries disastrous route towards the world welfare on a more general level, avoiding repeating the mistakes of the past in the name of profit and wealth of a minor group of rich people in the world.
