NAME OF THE PAINTING: 'The Night Watch '(1642)

NAME OF THE PAINTER:  Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669).The Dutch Baroque painter and printmaker Rembrandt is considered to be one of the greatest painters in European Art History. He is famous for his portraits of his contemporaries, self-portraits and illustrations of scenes from the Bible. He possessed an exceptional ability to depict people in their various moods and dramatic guises. He is known as a master of light and shade.  By Alex, Eleni P.

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE PAINTING: It is a group portrait of a company of Amsterdam civic guardsmen whose duty was to serve as defenders of their cities. The company is under the command of Captain Cocq, who wears the formal black attire and white lace collar of the upper class and turns his head to the left and emphatically extends his free hand as he addresses his lieutenant. Sixteen additional portraits of members of this company are also included. A mysterious girl emerges from the darkness with flowing blond hair and a fanciful gold dress. A large white chicken hangs upside down from her waistband. The girl acts as a mascot of the company.   By Maria, Eleni R., Lambros

ART MOVEMENT--PERIOD OF TIME. Rembrandt incorporated Baroque elements in the Genre paintings of the Dutch Golden Age. The Baroque style began around 1600 in Rome and spread in most places in Europe. The style was encouraged by the Catholic Church because religious themes should be communicated through arts. The images are emotionally intense and realistic with a dramatic contrast of light and dark. By Katerina, Filina, Elias, John

NAME OF THE PAINTING: 'The Raft of the Medusa'

NAME OF THE PAINTERJean-Louis André Théodore Géricault , was a French painter known for many paintings, one of which is “The Raft of the Medusa”. He was born on September 26th, 1791, two years after the start of the French Revolution.

    SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE PAINTING

“The Raft of the Medusa”, one of his most significant paintings, was created in the curse of almost one year (1818-1819). It’s notoriety is due to the theme, a French shipwreck called “Meduse”. The crew and many passengers died, it was a tragedy. The incident became a national scandal because of the fact that the captain left the men on board to die and saved his own life.

This incident caught Géricault’s attention and so he decided to immortalize this historical event. The painting itself is a statement, the  indictment of a corrupt establishment. The painting is also a representation of an essential theme, that of man’s struggle with nature.

“The Raft of the Medusa” is ondoubtedly a masterpiece and Géricault’s most ambitious work.

    FEELINGS ABOUT THE PAINTING/PHOTO.

"The most impressive one is the man who sits with his back at the camera looking at the horizon and those people who cling to him like he is their last hope for saving. They try to avoid the death that already took the lives of some men placed in the front plan"-Catalina

"I think that the picture created by the Greek pupils is very unique. I liked how they were paying attention to all the important details and how they truly understood the character each one had to play . Also the way they arranged the stage properly to be almost identical to the original painting was amazing and I was truly impressed by their dedication for this photo " - Andra

    FRANCIA   -  ITALIA
