The village of Mametz was totally destroyed during the battle of the Somme and was awarded by the French “Croix de guerre 1914-1918”.

The Flatiron Copse cemetary (“Cimetière du taillis du fer à repasser”) is near this village. Flatiron Copse was the name given by the soldiers to a small plantation at the east of the Mametz wood.

Le village de Mametz fut complètement détruit pendant la bataille de la Somme et se vit décoré de la « Croix de Guerre 1914-1918 » par le gouvernement français.

Le cimetière du « taillis du fer à repasser » est près de ce village. « Taillis du fer à repasser » était le nom donné par les soldats à un bosquet situé à l'est du village.

In this cemetary, in the plot IX, we can find the grave of the soldier John G.Donkin, who belonged to the DLI. He served into the "D" Coy., 4th Bn. attd. 15th Bn.

Born in 1891, he was killed in action on 17/07/1916 at the age of 25.

Dans ce cimetière, dans le lot IX, on trouve la pierre tombale du soldat John G.Donkin, qui appartenait à la DLI. Il servit au sein dans la compagnie D du 15^th bataillon. Né en 1891, il fut tué au combat le 17/07/1916 à l'âge de 25 ans.
