La bataille de Guillemont dure du 3 au 6 septembre. Le général Rawlinson, chef de la 4ème armée britannique, décide d’attaquer la seconde ligne de défense allemande, avec le village de Guillemont pour objectif. Sa prise permettrait aux Britanniques et aux Français qui sont à leur droite d’avancer vers Flers et Morval. Un bataillon de la DLI participe à l'attaque, le 11th, dans la 20th division. C'est un bataillon de sapeurs recrutés parmi les mineurs de la région de Durham.

La 20th division réussit à s'approcher au plus près de Guillemont, notamment à quelques mètres des restes de la gare. A la fin de la bataille les Allemands déclenchent une contre-attaque. Celle-ci commence par un violent bombardement de la 20th Division dans la matinée, suivi d’une attaque contre les positions britanniques situées au sud de la voie ferrée de Guillemont, par la 27ème division allemande. Mais les Britanniques restent maîtres du terrain.

The Battle of Guillemont lasted from September 3^rd to September 6^th. General Rawlinson, chief of the 4th British Army, decides to attack the second German defense line, with the village of Guillemont being the objective. This taking would allow the British and the French, located to the right, to move towards Flers and Morval. One DLI battalion takes part in the attack, it is the 11th, in the 20th division. This battalion is composed of sappers who have been recruited among miners from the region of Durham.

The 20th division succeeded in getting closer to Guillemont, they arrived near the remains of the train station. At the end of the battle, German soldiers triggered a counter-attack. This offensive started with a violent bombing of the 20th division in the morning, it was followed by an attack from the 27^th German division against the British positions which were located south of Guillemont railroad. Nevertheless, British soldiers remained leaders of these grounds.

Near Guillemont there is a memorial dedicated to the 20^th (Light) infantry division. The 11^th bataillon of the DLI was part of this division (in the 60^th brigade). It was an unit of pioneers.
