1first term 2nd year  cultural activities

LAST JANUARY WE WENT TO ROME FOR A SPECIAL TRIP.   WE VISITED THE GHETTO, THE SYNAGOGUE AND THE JEWISH MUSEUM ON A SPECIAL COMMEMORATIVE DATE: THE INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY.

THIS SPECIAL DAY WAS DESIGNED BY THE UNITED NATIONS  TO MARK THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE LIBERATION OF THE NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMPS AND THE END OF THE HOLOCAUST.

INFACT,  ON 27 JANUARY 1945,  THE LARGEST NAZI CONCENTRATION AND DEATH CAMP IN AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU WAS LIBERATED BY THE RED ARMY SO PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD KNEW ABOUT THE THE HOLOCAUST.

THE HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY IS ALSO A NATIONAL EVENT IN THE UNITED KINGDOM AND IN ITALY.

WE MET OUR GUIDE IN A SQUARE: HERE WE COULD READ A PLAQUE  TO THE FIRST JEWS FROM ROME. THEY WERE DEPORTED TO CONCENTRATION CAMPS BECAUSE OF A ROUNDING UP OF 1000 PEOPLE.

IN THE GHETTO WE READ  THE NAMES OF JEWS  ON THE “STUMBLING STONES: THEY WERE LITTLE BRASS PLAQUES CREATED BY GERMAN ARTIST GUNTER DEMNING  TO REMEMBER THE NAMES OF THE VICTIMS. YOU CAN FIND THEM AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE HOUSES THE VICTIMS HAVE LIVED IN.

THE SHOAH HISTORY FROM  BOOKS SEEMS TO BE ABSTRACT AND UNREAL: IT’S DIFFERENT WHEN YOU LEARN IT FROM THE SURVIVORS TESTIMONIES. YOU CAN FINALLY CATCH WHAT THAT GENOCIDE WAS: A DEVASTATING STORM THAT KILLED 6 MILLION JEWS.

SURVIVORS TESTIMONIES ABOUT PHYSICAL AND MENTAL TORTURES ON JEWS WERE TOUCHING AND SHOCKING FOR US. WE COULDN’T UNDERSTAND RACISM REASONS BECAUSE  WE KNOW THERE IS AN ONLY RACE: THE HUMAN ONE.

YOU CAN’T  BELIEVE IN A UNIQUE, PURE, SUPERIOR HUMAN RACE: IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE, ESPECIALLY NOW IN OUR MULTIETHNIC AND MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
