Second Step - Olympic Games

  • OPERATIVE PHASE 3

Later the teacher shows to interactive whiteboard a series of images, taken from the history book, in which some Greek athletes are seen playing some sports: such as discus throw, javelin throw, running and fight.

The teacher explains to the children that the photographs represent the Olympic Games, which took place, starting from 776 BC,  every 4 years in the sanctuary of Olympia and in honor of Zeus. During the competitions, open to all citizens, all war was suspended and the territory of Olympia was considered sacred.

After the explanation, the teacher organizes the Olympic Games in the gym/ sports field. Each child tests himself in discus throw, javelin throw and running.

    Instructions:

    Javelin throw

The athlete must throw the javelin as far as possible, after having made a short run-up.

    Discus throw

The athlete places himself on a circular platform and he must throw the disc as far as possible, after having performed one or more twists while standing.

    Running

The athlete must run fast for a short distance.

Finally, in the end, for each discipline, the best athlete wins. Winners are awarded with olive leaf wreaths, as in ancient Greece. But the real prize was glory: the best athletes were considered heroes and they became famous.
