Escola Secundária Jamie Moniz is located in Funchal, the capital city of Madeira, a Portuguese archipelago officially known as Autonomous Region of Madeira. Madeira is geologically located on the African Tectonic Plate, though the archipelago is culturally, economically and politically European. The archipelago has approximately 250.000 inhabitants. It is a popular year-round resort and is visited every year, on average, by about 1.4 million tourists. The region is noted for its Madeira wine, gastronomy, historical and cultural value, flora and fauna and embroidery artisans. Escola Secundária Jaime Moniz is the oldest high school in Portugal (1837). In 2018, it became an honorary member of the Order of Public Instruction, which is conferred upon deserving individuals for "high services rendered to education and teaching.“ Over 2000 students between the ages of 15 and 18, distributed into about 100 classes, attend this school and about 250 teachers work there every year.
