  • Ekonomska i turistička škola Daruvar is a medium-sized vocational school in which students get a degree in various fields (economy and hotel and catering industry). It is a high school in a little town with less than 400 pupils. The area itself is economically quite unfavorable for young people as they do not have too many opportunities to obtain practical knowledge or to find a job. Many families move abroad permanently. The challenge of working in such a school is teaching classes with mixed abilities, keeping them motivated, dealing with slow learners who need to catch up with the basic knowledge and advanced learners who are usually bored in the class. Thus, we get them engaged in different activities. The school has been taking part in many Comenius and Erasmus+ projects since 2011 and a few eTwinning projects. One projects was given an award Example of good practice and last year we received eTwinning quality label for our project Europe as a Workspce. Currently we are running four Erasmus+ KA2 projects. We see participation in the projects as excellent and innovative way of learning, meeting peers and getting to know other cultures by students and teachers. Our aim is to enrich the curriculum with extra-curricular activities, thus we participate in different activities such as taking part in UNICEF project Schools for Africa, by which we want to raise our students social awareness. We have also taken part in the project of production of the chocolate gift and gingercookie, the school was also one of very few schools in Croatia to take a part in the 2-year experimental program of Citizenship education which resulted in many different workshops and lectures, including hosting international Anne Frank exhibition at school and became the first peacemaking school in Croatia. Participation in all these different projects and the experience gained by the staff will contribute to the smooth running of this project. The key people will be the Erasmus+ school team who work on other projects and whose experience will contribute greatly to the completing the project to the best extent. They are language, IT, geography, history teachers and
teachers of vocational subjects. The idea for this project emerged because we have had similar projects but not one on what it takes to become a European citizen. Many of our students are very keen on taking part in our projects, hosting a student from abroad and travelling somewhere abroad, and this project will enable them to learn more about our common European background, its different cultures and traditions. We want our students to have the possibility to take part in international projects in order to improve their communication skills, in their mother tongue and in foreign languages, ICT and digital competences, and learn about intercultural understanding to overcome any bias they might have living in such a small area.
