European Day of the Righteous

  • March 6 celebrates the Day of the Righteous of humanity dedicated to keeping alive and renewing the memory of those who, in every time and in every place, have done good by saving human lives, fought in favor of human rights during genocides and they defended the dignity of the person by refusing to yield to totalitarianism and discrimination between human beings. We organised in our school different discussion groups aiming to point out the importance of human dignity and of living in peace, respecting different cultures.

"...Aristides de Sousa Mendes was a Portuguese ambassador who, in 1940, in what is regarded as the largest rescue operation carried out by a single person, saved more than 30,000 lives from Nazi persecution.

“I could not have acted otherwise, and I, therefore, accept all that has befallen me with love.”

Our school has always worked on Human Rights. The secondary school library has been working on projects with the theme of human rights for five years. The Righteous Among the Nations and the Holocaust are just some of the many subjects explored.

Students this year studied Leon Leyson's "The Boy on the Wooden Box" and discovered a Jewish perspective on Oskar Schindler.

Afterward, they watched the film “Schindler's List” and shared their conclusions with peers from other classes.
