NUCLEAR PHYSICS – A CURSE OR BLESSING FOR HUMANITY
From March to May 2019, the nuclear physics group prepared presentations on nuclear physics devices and applications. On the one hand, this work was aimed at preparing students for workshops in scientific institutions dealing with nuclear physics, and on the other, preparing them for a debate on "Nuclear Physics - a curse or blessing for humanity", in which they are going to decide whether the development of nuclear physics brings people more evil or good and think about the steps that should be taken to minimize the negative effects.
The students tackled the issue of nuclear energy generation, nuclear radiation detection, radioactive and fissile materials, acceleration of elementary particles and the use of nuclear physics in medicine. Particular attention was paid to the construction and operation of the cyclotron, which they were going to see in Warsaw, as well as the cloud chamber they are going to build and then use to observe cosmic rays at CERN near Geneva during a project meeting in France.
The authors showed their presentations to other project participants. The debate will take place in September of the next school year. Some of the presentations will also be showed at a project meeting in France, where a discussion on benefits and risks of developing and applying nuclear physics will also take place.
