NO SUGAR THEME DAY- Finland

  • On the seventh of February, 2020, we invited two experts to tell our students about the negative effects that excessive use of added sugar may cause.

Our seventh graders were reminded about the negative effects that sugar has on our teeth. Our expert, a dental hygienist, had brought us demonstrative material about the amounts of sugar in different food items. There was also a competition about the theme and the prize was an electric toothbrush.

The supervisor of our municipal central kitchens, which provide daily lunch to all our students and for example children in day care centres, gave our 8th graders information about sugar and its effects on our body and mind.

We learned, for example, that the recommended amount of added sugar should not exceed 55 grams daily.

We hope that this theme day gave us some food for thought in regard to a healthy diet, and we hope this to become a annual theme day in our school.
