This weekend we all celebrated the wedding of Prince Harry to Megan Markle.

The children have been learning about the royal family and wedding traditions all week and they have prepared everything from bunting, union jack flags, writing prince and princess stories, painting royal family members, making confetti, designing and decorating cakes and wedding dresses, looking at real tiaras and wedding dresses and flowers, making soldiers, Making carriages and we finished off the week by making cucumber sandwiches (how very British) and crispy cakes with decorated hearts for our Very British Barton street party. We're Proud to be British Week.

Yesterday, April 25th, was a national holiday here in Portugal. On this day we mark Liberty day. It is the day when a group of soldiers of the portuguese army ended with the Dictatorship Regime. It was it's 44th anniversary. Since 1974 the Red Carnation was adopted as the Revolution symbol. Last tuesday every child brought a carnation to school and then we have made a huge "human" carnation in the playground. Here are some photos to share with all of you. A salut to Democracy and freedom.

St George's Day is celebrated in England on 23 April, in honour of St George, the patron saint of England. This morning in assembly, we watched three children act out the story of St.George and the dragon. It is story dating back to the 6th century and tells us that St George rescued a maiden by slaying a fearsome fire-breathing dragon. The Saint's name was shouted as a battle cry by English knights who fought beneath the red-cross banner of St George during the Hundred Years War (1338-1453). We then sang two traditional English songs: ‘Hey Ho, Nobody Home’ and ‘What will we do with the Drunken Sailor’. Finally, we listened to a piece of music by the English composer Edward Elgar which is called ‘Pomp and Circumstance’.

Here's what kids from kindergarten made to celebrate Father's Day. They've read the book "P de pai" (Bernardo Carvalho and Isabel Minhós Martins) and did some lovely drawings inspired by the authos' work. (JMAP1)

Yesterday we celebrated International Mother Language Day. We are very lucky to have many families at Barton Hill Academy who can offer us insight into languages and cultures other than our own, so lots of children brought in something to share with their classmates which reflects their own language, culture or heritage.

International Mother Language Day is a worldwide annual observance held to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and promote multilingualism. Article 30 of the UNICEF rights of the child states that ‘Every child has the right to practice their own culture, language and religion’

Aydin brought in a Turkish flag and delicious recipes, Karina brought in Romanian story books, Pufferfish were treated to some Polish chocolates brought in by Oliver and Joel and Yokesh taught his class how to count up to 5 in Tamil to name but a few!

Here are just a few of many photos we have of children who relished the opportunity to share their language and culture with us.

At the start of this term, Year 2&3 learnt about how French and Spanish people celebrate the festival of Epiphany. Both countries celebrate with a special cake called ‘La Rosca de Reyes’ or ‘Galette des Rois’. This special cake eaten is eaten on 6th January to celebrate 12th Night. This was when the 3 Wise Men/Kings visited baby Jesus. We took part in the tradition by sharing a cake. In 2Seahorses Leyton found the lucky charm and in 3 Rays,  Tyler found the lucky charm – the ‘fève’, so he became King for the day and didn’t have to do any chores! Mrs.Northcott was the first visitor to our classroom so she was given the spare slice of cake. Bon appétit et bonne année 2018!

    Carnival Festivities

"The Caretos represent evil and mysterious characteres which go out in the streets for Carnival Festivities. Break the long winter silences, comming out secretly and unpredictably from Podence street corners. Nowadays, more than a tradition, the Caretos are the symbol of Northeastern culture, having become one of the most emblematic national groups" in Caretos de Podence.

     CARNIVAL IN ITALY !!!

Carnevale, also known as carnivall or mardi gras, is celebrated in Italy during the 40 days before Easter, and a final party before Ash Wednesday and Lent. Carnevale is one of Italy's biggest winter festival and events often last for two to three weeks before the actual carnival day. Many Italian towns celebrate Carnevale the weekend before the last day of carnival, which is on Shrove Tuesday.

Because the date of Easter changes yearly, so do the dates for carnival festivals, which can be anywhere from February 3 - March 9. If you're planning to go to Italy for a Carnevale celebration YOU SHOULD GO TO  Venice  or Viareggio!
