    GREECE - 11th PRIMARY SCHOOL

"Our school, the 11th Primary School of Chania (grades 1st – 6th) was built postwar and is the oldest one in the historic Halepa, a peripheral area where the majority of residents belong to the working class. Nowadays, there are 230 pupils in our school, who are divided in two different educational levels, including elementary and kindergarten classes.
The teaching staff consists of 30 teachers. The courses offered are Greek Language, Maths, Geography, History, Environmental Education, Foreign Languages, Physical Education, ICT, Music, Theatrical Education, Arts etc.
Regarding our students, they belong to different social, economic and cultural backgrounds. There are also students with special needs and learning disabilities, as well as several immigrants who are integrated in regular classes.
For that reason, we pay particular attention to the best integration of our students and the main target is to provide equal opportunities for all. In order to achieve this aim our staff have been trained to use a divergent pedagogical strategy and to encourage learning through Arts, such as theater, music, literacy and painting. Athletic, Environmental and Health activities play an important part in our curriculum. Because of student's diversity we focus on cooperative learning within multicultural and diverse groups. Moreover, methods and appoaches are developed to increase retention of high risk learners and prevent drop-out.
In recent years, there has been an effort for the school to be equipped with computers and ICT material, in general. A computer laboratory was created and teachers were trained to use ICT tools in order to provide a better learning environment and innovative teaching methodologies, thus supporting our pupils’ special educational needs. This is why our teachers are highly motivated in using ICT tools and flipped classroom transferring offers constructive and active knowledge to our students.
In addition, we strongly believe in intercultural education, European citizenship and European dimension. That's why we give emphasis to foreign language learning (by providing English, French and German) and we have already joined in a Comenius project with very beneficial results. Such an experience is of vital importance to both teachers and students as it develops a great awareness of Europe, expands their educational background knowledge, creates an environment of solidarity, openness and respect for other cultures and supports European citizenship.
We need to mention that our educational system does not provide many opportunities to “open up” the school to the local community and to the European environment. Through our participation, we expect to improve the cooperation with local and regional authorities, as they will provide the means to upgrade the school’s social and cultural connection to the community. It is an imperative need to achieve a better communication among schools, teachers and parents, an encouragement regarding school activities, and a reinforcement of European multicultural awareness."
