The refugee and our responsibility

  • What do we have to do? How will help? Is it easy for us? Why do I have to help? (human rights, solidarity, empathy).

We invite a refugee in our schools or we visit them.

ALL SCHOOLS CREATED COLLABORATIVELY REFUGEES SAYING THEIR RIGHTS. IN ENGLISH, IN GREEKS, IN ITALIAN, IN FRENCH, IN GERMAN, IN TURKISH.

KINDERGARTENS DREW THE REFUGEES AND PRIMARY SCHOOLS RECORDED THE RIGHTS,SPEAKING IN A SECOND LANGUAGE

    Playing brings children together.

The 4th Primary School of Petroupolis, in collaboration with the Scouts of Athens, and the NGO ARSIS, co-organized a play day for the children. The event took place on Saturday, May 19, at the Kypseli Municipal Market. It  was part of the twinning project "A new friend on our doorstep - the refugee" and was the result of a vote during the world cafe for refugees which took place at our school.

The aim of the event was the meeting and interaction of children through playing, a common reference of all the children around the world and the development of friendship with children refugees. We had the chance to meet children refugees from Afganistan, Sahra, Murtaza, Fazel, Ali, Hadi, Abulfazl, learn their life stories and meet their mothers with the help of their interpreteur.

    Evaluation of the event:

    • Students, parents and teachers who participated had a great time
    • Students got to know each other, played, had fun, painted and captured their emotions and opinions on their common paintings and we were all by their sensitivity and originality.
    • A climate of trust was created and characteristic of this was the fact that the children from ARSIS were eager to present their group’s painting to everyone. It was also overwhelming when a boy from Afghanistan narrated the myth of the contest between Poseidon and Athena, the ancient Greek gods.
    • Fizza’s message that mentioned how she had found a new best friend, Constadina was a touching moment. Equally touching was her mother’s reaction when we invited them to our school performance.

After the meeting with the volunteers and the youths of C.O.R.E. , the importance and value of the recognition of Universal Rights emerged.

We invited the children to reflect on what fundamental rights could be useful in order to live well, and after brainstorming, circle timing and reading of stories we created our Bill of Rights.

The rights were graphically represented on some panels that were then displayed during Europe Day.

To underline once again the value of solidarity, we continued our journey by reading the book "Puntino".

Puntino tells the adventure of black dots and white dots that meet to build together the future. It is a story of solidarity for adults and children, a book that teaches children the value of friendship and mutual help, stimulating their curiosity. The dots of two different colors join forces and experiment solutions to solve common problems: they will find the way to help each other, going to each other's side.

A Refugee child must have the same rights as all the children of the world. Here is the animation of a Refugee Child's Rights in Turkish language.
