Van Gogh - Italian School in Madrid

  • Thursday 23 November we started to work on Art for Christmas cards in classes 2 B and 2 C. We had the two main groups splitted in four subgroups, first to analize the picture and generating ideas. We also watched all the pages of Twinspace and we read carefully the page by Spanish school. They were interested to the video that shows how to paint with sticks. Children already know some main painter and they love Van Gogh and Mirò.

Searching on Google cultural Institute we found Starry Night that soon activated children reflections. As the picture resolution on that site is extraordinary, we could analize in details the painting. We noticed how thick is the colour and also that there are spaces not coloured, wher you can see the canvas. This fact surprised children, used to listen our " Colour all the blank spaces..." and we had a lovely discussion on the reasons why Van Gogh did not colour " properly" the canvas. You can listen the discussion in the video.

Children found in the paintings some interesting elements, as the tree, that seems to link the sky and the earth, the movement in the sky, the stars, the moon .. the village in the dark looks like Bethlem in the night, waiting..

In the video you can also listen the multinlingual reality that we live daily in our classes, Children mix Italian, Spanish and English.

After that we start to draw and to paint cards
