Orvieto

 

Orvieto is a very beautiful town in the central Italy (Umbria region)

 

 

Orvieto Cathedral:The cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the main place of Catholic worship in Orvieto.

Saint Patrician shaft: the well, 54 meters deep, was excavated in the tuff.

It was built between 1527 and 1537

A group of Orvieto speleologists from the late seventies led the exploration of the underground of the city, which led to the rediscovery of more than 1200 artificial cavities.
The construction of the undergrounds has brought to light some very important findings: a long series of cisterns (Etruscan-medieval period); tunnels excavated in Etruscan times for water collection, (the longest is about 30 meters) and wells used in the Middle Ages as dumps.
